Description

A Doctorate is awarded to those persons who complete the appropriate course at a recognised University Level institution in the New Earth System.

Persons whose work is recognised by a University Level institution as of national or international importance, and who have not otherwise gained a Doctorate qualification, may be awarded an Honorary Doctorate.

The awarding of a Doctorate is a privilege restricted by law in all Governments. Falsely claiming such a qualification is a recognised form of fraud.

The awarding of a Doctorate of any sort is often accompanied by the presentation of a physical certificate that states this fact.

People holding Doctorates may style themselves with the title "Doctor".

History

The various levels of Academic Award that had been earned from institutions on Earth were seen, by the early settlers, as key markers in the educational attainment of their children. The clarification of what would constitute a Doctorate was, thus, set very early in the history of New Earth. The first Doctorates (All Honorary) were awarded in 19 to people whose efforts had been key in making the colonisation work - and were needed for the teaching posts in the new University at Red Hill.
