Calsan is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Paradise Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data
Goolan-Calsan System
The primary is Goolan, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.21 Sols, a mass of 1.04 Sols, and a diameter of 1.433 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a trace atmosphere inner world, and (III) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world. (IV) Calsan orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (VI) a ringed large gas giant, and (VII) a small gas giant form the outer zone. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
Mainworld Data
(IV) Calsan
(IV) Calsan is designated the mainworld. It orbits primary at a mean distance of 0.98 AU (146.6 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 350 days 21 hours and a rotation period of 27.5 hours. The axial tilt is 16 degrees. Calsan has a diameter 8,135 km, a density of 5.66 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.66 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.91 bar and a composition of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% argon, water vapour, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The atmospheric taint is caused by spores and pollens of organic origin. Approximately 62% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.5m. Mean surface temperature: 24°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and strong weather systems driven by the star and the oceans sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal.
Satellites:
Calsan retains two satellites a very thin atmosphere hospitable world named Rasenik and an ice capped vacuum worldlet named Pomardo:
- (IVa) Rasenik, UWP Y322000-0, orbiting at 25 Diameters (203,000 km)
- (IVb) Pomardo, UWP Y201000-0, orbiting at 30 Diameters (244,000 km)
Mainworld geography and topography
Total surface area: 208 million km², Water surface area: 129 million km², Land surface area: 79 million km².
Native lifeforms
Calsan has extensive native life. Their metabolic processes maintain a cycle of atmospheric renewal.
History & Background (Dossier)

World starport
Calsan has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Calsan possesses a Technology Level of TL–5.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion, and the most fundamental atomic energy.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ground cars or automobiles and tracked vehicles.
- Water: Large ships and submersibles with steel hulls.
- Air: Early aircraft including seaplanes and very early unmanned rockets.
World government
Calsan is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World military
There are no formal military formations available for service off world.
World economy
A subsidiary of Industrias Espinosa is present on world. Rumors of a pharmaceutical branch are in the works. This is a very strange move for this company which has never shown any interest in this field of study. Local organisms produce a cornucopia of organic compounds which if properly refined have profound effects on human metabolisms. Recreational drugs aside, medical advances have shown promise. Rose Bloom & Co has set up a series of experimental test farms here as well. They currently have a Inquiry class Lab Ship in orbit with a field team collecting samples. Rumors of a potent combat drug persist. Common among indigenous male gangs their berserkers are reported to be capable of superhuman feats of strength and endurance and ignore grievous injuries and mortal wounds for far longer than formally thought possible. Repeated doses invariably lead to toxic over-dosing and dramatically shortened life expectancy. More off world military and commercial interests may become involved soon.
Trade data
This planet is a backwater with no regularly scheduled commercial traffic. Speculative free traders do gather for seasonal harvests which can be sold off world for modest profit margins.

World culture
This is currently a matrilineal society. Historic wars and internal conflicts during periods of isolation and abandonment, had destroyed a large percentage of the male population and once gender numbers re-balanced, females had assumed most leadership roles and where heading households and major economic interests. Women vote, own land, and farms. Men are married off to good families via arranged marriages. There is a dangerous and violent sub culture of unwed men, left alone and unsupervised. The overly aggressive males are unsuitable and frequently relegated low rent ghettoes and the fringes of society. Some warbands roam the wastes as criminals. Within settlements groups of bonded, unwed men are traded for and used as mobile labor pools for harvests and plantings. They are used for manual labor, and maintain farm equipment under careful female supervision. Powerful women manage these work units and sell their services to the highest bidders. There is a sect of unwed women, who do not own land. They belong to various protective orders. These sisters are extremely proficient in martial arts and serve as security monitors. These sisters are rumored to possess psionic abilities and training which they receive at their isolated cloisters. Years of training and indoctrination ensure their are extremely well trained. Myth, legend and heavy tradition ensure their societal role as deeply respected and honored protectors of civil order and security and the hands of justice. They are marked by bright yellow robes and cloaks. Their skills in negotiation, compromise and conflict resolution are highly sought after, even off world.
