Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard Shipyard v1.13 written by Andrea Vallance.

The Burning Sky class Merchant Schooner is a commercial Starship.

Description (Specifications)

The vessel has a streamlined, generally saucer-shaped hull with a "teardrop" profile and a distinctive side-mounted bridge. It is fitted with fuel scoops and a fuel purification plant allowing it to perform wilderness refuelling. It is a basic but reliable vessel with a spacious hold accessed by a ventral ramp. Many locally-modified variants of the design exist, usually with different numbers of staterooms and low berths, the addition of subcraft or vehicles, or upgraded performance and electronics.

  • This vessel normally carries no offensive or defensive equipment.
  • The vessel carries no subcraft.
  • It has a 8 sophont crew and no marines.

Basic Ship Characteristics

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage / Hull The Burning Sky class is constructed using a 300 Ton hull built in a Flattened Sphere configuration. The hull is fully streamlined and has airfoil surfaces, giving good atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems.
  • The vessel has two airlocks. The cargo hold is accessed by a large ventral door that also serves as a loading ramp.
  • The vessel has sturdy retractable legs, allowing surface landings.
2. Crew x8 personnel.
  • x1 Captain/navigator, x1 pilot, x1 engineer, x1 steward, x1 medic, x3 three gunners.

Accommodations

  • There are 20 Staterooms.
    • x4 Staterooms are given over to the crew. All crew quarters are double occupancy.
    • Up to 8 "High Passage" passengers may be carried. The steward sees to their needs.
    • Up to 8 additional "Middle Passage" passengers may be carried.
  • There are 6 Low Berths. They are tended by the vessel's medic.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off.
  • There are multiple emergency lockers.
3. Performance The vessel mounts a Jump-1 drive, a Maneuver-1 drive, and a Power Plant-1, giving performance of Jump-1 and 1-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 0 and an emergency agility of 1. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for two consecutive Jump-1s and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
  • The engineering section has a main control room.
  • The jump drive utilizes a lanthanum hull grid.
  • The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4. Electronics Adjacent to the [small craft bridge] bridge is a Model/2 computer: no backup computer is installed.
  • There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel.
  • The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a basic sensor array, and has an avionics suite.
  • It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
5. Hardpoints x3 hardpoints.
  • The listed weapons systems are typical for the class. Alternative weaponry may be designated for specific missions.
6. Armament The normal weapons fit-out for a Burning Sky class is:
7. Defenses The hull is unarmored.
  • x1 triple Sandcaster turret, forming its own battery.
  • The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8. Craft The vessel carries no subcraft.
9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 63 Tons.
  • The hull is fitted with fuel scoops.
  • The vessel is equipped with a fuel purification plant that can refine all onboard fuel in XX hours: the plant is operated and maintained by the engineering crew.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel is MCr111.736
  • Architects Fee: MCr1.117
11. Construction Time 56 weeks (13 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Comments Standard cargo capacity amounts to 100.0 Tons.
  • The cargo hold can be sealed and has independent life support and environmental systems.
  • Sections of the hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration.

Alternate Crew

On routes that generate more passenger revenue, the crew complement and stateroom usage is often adjusted as follows:

No. Category Remarks
2. Crew 9 personnel (2 officers, 7 enlisted).
  • x1 Captain/navigator, x1 pilot, x1 engineer, x2 stewards, x1 medic, x3 gunners.

Accommodations

  • There are 20 Staterooms.
    • 5 Staterooms are given over to the crew. The Captain has an individual cabin: all other crew quarters are double occupancy.
