Bleak (Al 1303) is a poor, low-population world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in population size.

  • This world-system hosts a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.

System Data

Bleak is a binary system of 2 small, dim red dwarf stars.

1 Gas Giants — 3 Planetoid Belts — 5 Other Worlds

Bleak has the role of strategic refueling point. As the slightly larger, star, Bleak Alpha, has a large gas giant. In the next innermost orbit is where one finds the Bleak mainworld, which acts as a gravitic center for the system naval base.

Mainworld Data

The Bleak mainworld, also called Bleak, is a larger-sized rocky planet that is tidally-locked to its primary star. Its size allows it to retain a thin atmosphere despite its propinquity to its temperamental dwarf star. There is a small startown maintained at the twilight interface in a deeper-than-average crater, populated primarily by scientists and mining prospectors. It's positioning affords it some protection from solar radiation storms.

It is also used as a physical training camp by the Solomani Navy due to its gravity well.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Bleak is a rock with no oceans, and mostly impact craters for decoration.

There is a icy area at the cold-pole, that is sometimes mined for additional water.

Native Lifeforms

World Starport

Bleak (Al 1303) has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Bleakport is a top-notch highport run by the Solomani Navy. There are regular port-calls by military capital ships and continual maintenance activities. Civilian traffic is scheduled as convenient, given military priorities. That said, costs for starship construction and maintenance can be as much as 20% lower than most systems, if you are willing to wait.

World Technology Level

Bleak (Al 1303) possesses a Technology Level of TL–14 or TL-E in Hexadecimal Notation.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early meson communicators.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, early collectors, and advanced fusion plants.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:

World Government

Bleak (Al 1303) is governed by a Participatory Democracy where eligible voters determine laws and policy. What determines an eligible voter varies. There may be smaller councils or regional bodies to write the policies voted on. Leadership of the government and all members of the bureaucracy are determined by voting population.

World Law Level

Bleak (Al 1303) has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Portable energy weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

Most of the population is military or is cleared by the military. Sidearms are commonly carried in hip holsters. Long arms are generally frowned-upon by civilians unless being carried outside the startown. Violence is rare and generally limited to fisticuffs. Military violators are prosecuted under military law.

The sparse "citizenry" do vote and elect representatives, but their power is essentially limited to the startown and only over local issues. This limitation is a sore point between the Navy and the local citizens.

World Military

The Solomani navy owns and operates the high- and down-ports.

World Economy

Small mining concerns and local mercantile firms catering to the military dominate the economy. Science teams are funded from off-world.

Trade Data

Metallic radioactives.

World Demographics

World Culture

Most civilians claim Dahiri origins, with a double-handful of Laioian religious refugees making up the balance.

Media and clothing are typical of decade-old Dahirian sources, though irregularly the Navy personnel will provide recent material from Home. The small public school system is well-regarded here.

The navy personnel and local population generally tolerate each other well, as long as both parties are polite. Outsiders and military new-arrivals represent the bulk of cultural friction and "misunderstandings".

Urbanization

The Bleak startown is the extent of urbanization. While "bleak", it is relatively comfortable, well-provisioned, and has access to excellent technological services.
