Barsoom is a high-population world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.

  • This world has a nearby Naval Base, usually associated with military starships.
  • This world has a nearby Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces.
  • This world has a colony at Arisia (world).

Description / Astrography & Planetology

The Barsoom primary is small, older star, with only the mainworld in its habitable zone.

System Data

The Barsoom primary is a M1 spectral class star; a smaller, older star than most in this region. It has a habitable zone of 0.14 AU and 0.24 AU.

This system has 2 gas giants, making it viable refueling point.

There are 7 rocky worlds, with Barsoom being the largest and closest body.

  • 0.20 AU Barsoom

Mainworld Data

Barsoom is a standard rocky planet, with a metallic core, and a planetary day of 14.0 standard hours. This configuration provides a stronger than normal magnetic field, allowing for life to survive in such close propinquity to its primary. The high spinrate and increased radius of Barsoom also reduces the effective gravity at the surface.

Barsoom is a planetary oddity: a small world with a thin oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere and a significant amount of water. Although close to its red dwarf sun, it is not tide-locked and has two small moons. which appear to be captured planetoids -- though no planetoid belt exists in the system. These anomalies have fueled speculation about planetary engineering performed by a pre-Humaniti civilization.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Barsoom appears to be a old world with little tectonic activity. There are several mountain ranges, but most are of moderate altitude or lower. There are 3 large seas distributed across the surface.

The planetary ecology is described as quite fragile, and the population takes threats to its well-being seriously as part of planetary policy.

Recently the government has taken independent action against the pirates who plague the subsector.

Native Lifeforms

The planetary ecology is described as quite fragile, the government tightly regulates all on-planet economic activity.

History & Background (Dossier)

Barsoom is an important, high-population world with two small moons, located in Jardin Subsector of the Solomani Rim.

World Starport

Gladstone has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Technology Level

Gladstone possesses a Technology Level of TL–13 or TL-D in Hexadecimal Notation.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovideo recorders.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, prototype collectors, advanced fusion plants.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:

World Government

Gladstone is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

World Law Level

Scout Survey has assigned Law Level B, with rigid government-imposed limitations on civilian movements. In most locations, these limits are largely reasonable, allowing for a normal standard of living and business activities. Limits become more controlling around any region or activity that touches on the environment or ecostructures.

World Military

Recently the government has taken independent action against the pirates who plague the subsector.

World Economy

The Barsoon economies are many and varied, and focus on local demand. Due to the fragility of the local ecosystems, Barsoon imports large amounts of food stuffs from its neighbor, Gladstone_(world).

Trade Data

Metals, manufactured goods, computers, electronics, heavy equipment.

World Demographics

Humaniti 100%

World Culture

"The world moves quickly, but we move with care."

This world is prosperous, producing valued products efficiently using the latest technologies. Its people work hard, but have a continuous lifestyle that deliberately ignores the position of the Sun.

Public Education, including advanced degrees, are free. As a result, a significant portion of the population is always continuing its education. Engineering and Science research is always ongoing.

Urbanization

Cities are more or less evenly spread over the surface, following resource centers.
