Barabek is a nonindustrial, rich, agricultural world with improving living conditions due to a bustling agro-economy.

  • As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This is a rich world with a prosperous and thriving world economy.
  • Its economy is bustling and an increase in living conditions is expected in the near future.
  • This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Orowan Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data

Basa-Barabek System

The primary is Basa, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.21 Sols, a mass of 1.04 Sols and a diameter of 1.433 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a vacuum inner world, and (III) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world. (IV) Barabek orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VI) a small gas giant, (VII) a small ice giant, (VIII) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (IX) a ringed large gas giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(IV) Barabek

(IV) Barabek is designated the mainworld and orbits Basa at a mean distance of 0.98 AU (146.6 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 347 days 11 hours and a rotation period of 19.75 hours. The axial tilt is 17.5 degrees. Barabek has a diameter of 7,825 km, a density of 4.79 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.53 G. It is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Dense, with a mean surface pressure of 1.75 bar and a composition of 77% nitrogen, 22% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. Approximately 72% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.75m. Mean surface temperature: 26°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and powerful weather systems, driven by the star and the oceans, sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Satellites:

Barabek retains a single natural satellite, a small ice-capped vacuum worldlet named Bubusa:

(IVa) Bubusa (UWP Y101000-0, orbits at 20 Diameters/157,000 km)

Mainworld geography and topography

Total surface area: 192 million km², Land surface area: 54 million km², Water surface area: 138 million km².

Native lifeforms

Barabek, the mainworld, has extensive and abundant native life, with organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. The local flora has a tendency towards tall narrow stems and flat leaves: foliage is generally dark green in colour. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. Apex predators inject their prey with digestive enzymes. Their piercing mouthparts can penetrate a few cm of steel among the larger morphs. A 400kg species is famous for its extensive warrens of tunnels. They ambush prey from hidden underground pits. The bite inflicts deep puncture wounds and they use grasping appendages to pull prey underground to feed.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Barabek has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Barabek possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

World government

Barabek is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.
