Atmospheric Train

Description (Specifications)
An atmospheric train uses differential air pressure to provide power for propulsion of a railroad vehicle.
The motive power is communicated to the train through a continuous pipe or main laid between the rails. Along the upper surface of the pipe is a continuous slit or groove, sealed by a flexible strip-valve (typically made from a durable material such as leather or plastic) that is held closed by the difference in external atmospheric pressure and the lower partial vacuum pressure within the pipe. A piston, located within the pipe, is attached to the leading carriage in each train by means of an articulated arm that projects through the slot in the pipe.
Gas pumps, placed at regular intervals along the track, create differences in pressures within the pipe: this generates enough force move the piston located within it. In this way the system transmits motive power to the vehicle, avoiding the necessity of it carrying bulky, heavy power generating equipment and fuel. The use of multiple gas pumps along a section of track allows more than one train to be run on a single track at a time.

A train is a form of transport consisting of a series of connected vehicles that generally runs along a prepared path or track to transport cargo or passengers. The word "train" comes from the Old French trahiner, derived from the Latin trahere meaning "to pull" or "to draw."
- Because of the vast variety of forms of transportation that exists within Charted Space, the generic term "train" is used to define two or more linked vehicles operating on a defined guideway in order to transport cargo or passengers between locations. Terms such as railroad, monorail or gravlev are names for specific types of train.
