Description (Specifications)[edit]

Vargr Sub-Species: Like most other subspecies of Vargr, the Akumgeda fled Lair (Provence 2402) after their people were ostracized by the majority of the Vargr population. The Akumgeda settled on a number of worlds in Ksinanirz Sector and although some of these settlements still exist, many of the packs reintegrated with their brethren as the Vargr expanded throughout the Vargr Extents.

The Akumgeda appear much like normal Vargr but they tend to have spotted fur. Although unusual, spots are not unknown and the Akumgeda found it easy to blend in with ‘normal Vargr’ unnoticed. What set the Akumgeda apart was their strong psionic ability. Some Vargr postulate that the standard Vargr species only developed psionic powers since the Akumgeda reintegrated with Vargr society but there is no evidence to support this.

The Akumgeda speak a Vargr dialect that is both a holdover from Arrghoun and a blend with the newer Gvegh tongue. The linguistic drift continues to infect the Akumgeda and the language is evolving even today. Gvegh scholars have yet to separate their language, pierce Akumgeda and lock down the core elements of Arrghoun and is a topic of debate.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Lair histories tell of a spotted pelt subspecies of Vargr that had been marginalized, abused and ostracized to near breaking points. This subspecies, calling themselves the Akumgeda, having endured enough torment invested in a secret exodus from the Vargr homeworld Lair and make coreward for a new home. The Akumgeda were the last wave of Vargr minorities with misunderstood, aberrant mental phenomena to leave Lair. Two other psionic subspecies had already fled by the time the Akumgeda were next on the list to be purged by ostracism. Less dexterous and more given to mental acumen, the Akumgeda were otherwise the same as standard Vargr but for their spotted pelts that gave them away to observers.

Sometime in the First Diaspora, the Akumgeda had endured enough hatred to be prodded from Lair in Jump-2 capable colonization starships outbound for points coreward though their initial tack was spinward-coreward through Ngathksirz, Dhuerorrg and coreward into Ksinanirz Sector where they surveyed and colonized Ularr (Ksinanirz 1408 A355578-B). It took more than 72 weeks of travel in then uncharted space to arrive at Ularr. Many Akumgeda were forced to endure the search while asleep in cavernous starship holds filled with Low Berths arrays. They had ranged out ahead of the other exploration vectors then mostly concentrated spinward of Provence Sector. From Ularr, the Akumgeda spread out over nearly three subsectors and galvanized themselves for a quiet frontier and peaceful existence.

The Akumgeda during their exodus and search for a new home continued to hone their psionic talents even as they held onto memories of Lair and their origins left forever behind. They still spoke Arrghoun, the lost language of the Vargr and kept meticulous records of their journey, surveys and hardships as they approached the suitable world of Ularr and found the Jump-2 neighborhood ripe for expansion.

But the solitude of the Akumgeda was disturbed by the following wave of exploratory Gvegh culture. Long forgotten were the Akumgeda, lost in the annals of history. Thus, the Gvegh were surprised to find the psionic Vargr of the Kechk Pact polity. Without the racism of Lair, the Gvegh took to the Akumgeda with curiosity and a willingness to make peaceful contact, subject to the usual racial tendency for seeking Charisma. The Gvegh brought with them higher technologies and more efficient fleets of explorers, merchants, navies and of course Corsairs. Part of this curiosity was that the Akumgeda had no previous contact with the distant Zhodani Consulate to spinward and yet had discovered psionics talents on their own. This originality without Zhodani 'taint' and subtle manipulations appealed to the region's Gvegh.

There was much intermingling of Vargr and the Akumgeda became less a culture, absorbed into the expanding Gvegh and merely a subspecies that let Arrghoun fade into a dead language in favor of the efficient Gvegh language. This was made doubly easy to learn through the Akumgeda use of telepathy by tying thoughts of a Gvegh speaker to the spoken word. Thus the Akumgeda were absorbed and accepted into the Gvegh though their phenotype and psionic potentials continued to breed true.

All the new innovations, diversions, attractions and culture injection eventually drove a subtle wedge between the latest generation of Akumgeda Vargr and its more traditional, secluded elders. When the majority of spinward worlds of the Kechk Pact saw the fruits of high technology, a movement began to "reverse course", return to the greater Vargr Extents community and conduct trade and welcome Emissaries from other polities such as the Brzeh Council, Democracy of Greats and the Empire of Varroerth. This did not sit well with the elders who recalled their grandsires' historical account of the exodus from Lair at the ostracism of the majority Vargr there. The generational gap was widening and soon the Kechk Pact began to distance themselves from the now-embedded Gvegh. Keeping the Gvegh at arm's length the elders laid down policy of separatist tendencies, cultural and economic.

The wilder youth would have nothing get in their way of greater Charisma, trade, glory in expansion and many other enticements the Gvegh offered. At least the Gvegh were not persecuting the Akumgeda generations later, they believed. In an overnight coup, the younger generation seized Forraroekou (Ksinanirz 0908 A629500-E) a lawless, high-tech world ripe for development by the combined Akumgeda rebels and the Gvegh. The Gvegh did not understand the schism to begin with and sought to peacefully do business with both generations of Akumgeda as opportunity arose. With technology, youth and a higher average world Tech Level, Forraroekou became the hotbed of separation and an about-face of the youth back to the Vargr Extents and greater civilization and opportunity. Faced with a deficit of sufficient technology, production, and naval vessels (the fleet had been sent to patrol the Spinward edge of the polity), the Kechk Pact was forced to default and grudgingly accept the Kechk Reversion and the loss of 17 worlds to the Gvegh and their younger generation. The Reversion was unable, due to typical Vargr tendency, to consolidate its claimed worlds and lost five of its newly-claimed worlds including Goeollaz (Ksinanirz 0910), the Reversion's only Industrial world. A stalemate ensued with neither polity able to overmatch the other. The Pact held the master psions and the home advantage as well as the Rich and Agricultural worlds. The Reversion held the worlds with the superior Starports, the Navy, nominal support of the Gvegh, (who were invested and interested in peace betwixt the Pact and the Reversion). The standoff held until Gvegh Emissaries from the coreward-spinward expansion arm sued for peace and won the treaty though the two Akumgeda nations were forever divided in their mindsets and future forecast.

The Kechk Pact sees its seclusion as a valued asset, keeping safe from the other Vargr of the Extents and trading only through its younger relative, the Kechk Reversion.

Meanwhile the Kechk Reversion sees both trade and support from the Gvegh as that culture continues to spread coreward after reaching its spinward-most expansion against the Zhodani Consulate.
