Abiogenesis is a biological term for how organic life arises from inorganic matter. I.e. the first organisms or simple creatures aka organic lifeforms

Description (Specifications)

The exact mechanism by which organic life arises from inorganic matter is still not well understood even after centuries of study. The physical components of life and even their exact combinations, the so called "recipe," are well understood, but the exact process by which life is imbued in the right recipe is still not reliably reproducible.

History & Background (Dossier)

Many of the major races are actively exploring the process of Uplift and advanced geneering. While TL-15 science can readily modify existing life in the form of genetically modified organisms, it cannot create new life. This is very much an unexplored scientific frontier. Or perhaps more to the point, it is a little explored scientific frontier of great interest.

While all of the major races are exploring these areas, not all of the minor races are... Many have cultural taboos in place prohibiting study into the origin of life.
