Description (Specifications)[edit]
The 40th Squadron is one of the best-organised Vargr bands in Gvurrdon Sector. They are descended from a squadron of Vargr warships that survived the First Frontier War[1] in 604 and established their own petty kingdom in the chaotic aftermath of the conflict. The Squadron controls a loose alliance of a half-dozen systems.
Individual planets have their own governments but the Squadron’s naval officers are the real power in the empire.
The Squadron lacks the resources to maintain its full fleet without external help; in the past, the Zhodani have propped up the Squadron to threaten the Imperium’s flank.
The 40th Squadron is located in the Uthe subsector, and is also known as Ekhlle Ksafi.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The 40th Squadron was part of the Outworld Coalition during the 5th Frontier War. It contributed two fleets, the Gireel Fleet and the Uthith Fleet, to the war and attacked into the Regina subsector through Dentus towards Enope. The initial attack met little resistance, but the Vargr forces nevertheless wasted some time mopping up and consolidating.
The Third Imperium responded by sending the 212th Fleet from Rhylanor to the vicinity of Beck's World where the battle lines stabilized. In mid-1109, the Gireel Fleet was destroyed and the Uthith Fleet was forced back. On 252-1109, the Uthith Fleet negotiated a separate peace and withdrew from the subsector.
The fleets were both jump-3 capable. Of the ground forces involved, 73% were equipped to TL-13, 23% to TL-12, and 5% to TL-10.
Government[edit]
Governmental continuity is preserved through a custom of using low passage to preserve the most charismatic and talented ship captains and select crewmembers (who have won this honor through service). The First Officers of the Squadron run the ships and, through regular inter-ship councils and meetings with planetary leaders, the state's foreign policy. "Old Crew" are thawed in time of military or political crisis.
Military & Intelligence (Force Projection)[edit]
With assistance from the Zhodani military, the Squadron navy is one of the most effective fleets in Gvurrdon Sector. The state is governed by officers from the eponymous 40th Squadron and they still use the same ranks and military discipline established during the First Frontier War. The crew of each ship had a high degree of camaraderie, even for Vargr, and mates are sought from other ships within the fleet, resulting in a distinct, closed culture.
