The Ursa of Khush (Ley 1804) are a technologically sophisticated Uplifted Race with a somewhat humanoid appearance.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Ursa are a genetically engineered and uplifted species. They are members of the typoid known as Ursinoids. They are classified as Terragens, a lifeform with an origin on Terra.
Although the homeworld is listed as Khush (Ley 1804), the actual world on which the Ursa were uplifted is not known, and the world on which the underlying species evolved was Terra (Solomani Rim 1827). The Ursa's tolerence of various atmospheric taints is one factor that has been included in the Geneering undertaken to uplift this species.
n.b. Ursa have the best sense of smell of any Terragen mammal, exceeding even that of the Vargr.

Biology[edit]
These sophonts were genetically engineered by early Solomani from Terran "bear" stock. When this phase of Solomani arrogance came to an end, attempts were made to destroy the Ursa. Some of the Ursa escaped and split into two groups. One enclave made their way to Shishkala (Corridor 1607), in the Domain of Vland. The other group made their way to Khush (Ley 1804), in the Domain of Gateway, beyond the border of the Third Imperium.
Genetic Code (Genotype)[edit]
Ursa use the following IISS code:
- SDEITS-SP
- Strength
- Dexterity
- Endurance
- Intelligence
- Training
- Social Standing
- Sanity
- Psionics
- More complex genetic coding data available to qualified personnel upon request.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Solomani originally created the Ursa as an experiment. GenAssist decided the uplift was not going to produce the results they desired, and attempted to terminate the program. The worlds on which the Ursa were first successfully raised to sophonce is unknown, but are assumed to be within the present or historical reach of the Solomani Sphere.
According to their own legends, the termination of the Ursa Program was discovered by the subject Ursa at one facility, who engineered their escape, determined the locations of other parts of the Program, and liberated those Ursa as well. They then arranged passage, stowed away, or were granted travel on sympathetic ships, and fled coreward into the twilight of the Rule of Man. At some point the refugees were divided by accident or design. The best known and larger group, comprised mostly of the more massive and aggressive brown Ursa, swung to trailing and eventually found shelter and concealment with the Luriani in Ley Sector. In later years they would expand to a few locations in Fornast Sector. The other branch, comprised mostly of Ursa derived from the smaller and more inquisitive black bears, continued coreward to Vland, then swung around the Claw into Corridor Sector, still largely wild and unexplored at the time. Two worlds in Corridor (Shishkala and Tamilaa) were found acceptable and the Black Ursa settled there to thrive and wait out the Long Night.
