A Jump Gate is an FTL Portal linking one part of space with another through an FTL tunnel.
* Please also see: Alternative FTL Drive

Description (Specifications)
Jump Gates are important alternate FTL routes to the stars, but the jump drive is more flexible and is near universally employed throughout Charted Space.

Naturally-occurring Jump Gates
Naturally occurring jump gates are known as:
* Wormholes

Other Types of Jump Gates
Sophont-made jump gates and similar technologies include:
# Argian Stargate
# FTL Tunnels
# Jump Gates
# Jump Tunnels
# Portals
# Star Gates

History & Background (Dossier)
Starship-sized matter transport portals are unavailable at TL:13-15 and it is not believed that the technology will be available until the TL:19-27 Technological Period or perhaps at a more advanced, later age.
* It is believed that the Ancients and possibly other precursor sophont species possessed this technology.
* The only jump gates found in Charted Space are artifacts, left from other, more advanced civilizations or...
* They are independently developed technologies developed within Charted Space.
Description (Specifications)
Interstellar Travel: Worlds orbiting different stars are reached by interstellar travel, which makes use of the jump drive. Once a starship moves to a safe distance from a world, it may activate its jump drive. Jump drives are rated from 1 to 6: the number of parsecs which can be travelled in roughly one week’s time. Actually, making any jump takes about one week, regardless of the distance travelled. Transit time to 100 diameters from a Size 8 world takes five hours at one Gravity or G of acceleration.

Commercial starships usually make two jumps per month. They spend one week in jump, followed by one week in the star system, travelling from the jump point to the local world, refueling, marketing cargo, finding passengers, leaving the starport, and proceeding to a jump point again. The week in the system usually provides some time for crew recreation and wandering around the planet.

Non-commercial ships usually follow the same schedule of one week in jump and one week in a system. If haste is called for, a ship may refuel at a gas giant immediately, and re-jump right away. This allows the ship to make one jump per week, but makes no provision for cargo, passengers, or local stops. Interstellar travel is priced on the basis of accommodations; prices cover a trip from starport to starport, encompassing one jump, regardless of length.

There are four primary types of passage:
# High Passage
# Middle Passage
# Working Passage
# Low Passage

Travel Formulae
Travelling in Charted Space: The travel formulae and diagram used by the Imperial Navy and Scout Service show a typical interplanetary journey, and equations which can determine time required (if distance and acceleration are known), acceleration required (if distance and time are known), and distance travelled (if time and acceleration are known]. All of the formulae use the MKS (meters, kilograms, seconds) unit system, and assume that the ship is undertaking a journey from rest, that it accelerates continuously to midpoint of the trip, and then decelerates to rest again.
Interstellar Travel Methods
Some of the other ways to travel the stars include:
|+ Interstellar Travel
! Method
! Type
! Conveyance
! Speed
! Remarks
|- valign="top"
| Starpass
| Travel Voucher
| Starship
| Typically J-1 to J-2
| A Starpass is a widely accepted prepaid travel voucher ensured by a large financial interest, usually a world government or large interstellar polity. Starpass investor groups keep starship crews paid and are sought after by captains for their reliability of income. In return, Starpass holders receive travel priority and discounted fare. An individual with a Starpass is a sought after commodity. Travel costs are ensured and reliable. The tickets get paid.
|- valign="top"
| Jumpliners
| Jumpliner
| Starship
| Typically J-1 to J-2
| Jumpliners are the most common ways of travelling the stars. They are large passenger starships optimized to carry many passengers at low prices. There are many types of jumpliners each specialized for a specific market or circumstance.
* Travel Passage
|- valign="top"
| Clipper Service
| Jumpliner
| Starship
| Typically J-4 to J-6
| Clippers are jumpliners designed to travel the starways at a much higher speed than conventional passenger and cargo traffic. Due to the higher cost of passage, only high profit or high interest routes are chosen, typically subsector or sector capitols although sometimes particularly important trade nexus hubs or industrial centers are included.
* Traditional passenger service connects specific worlds with layovers for refueling, debarkation and embarkation, and cargo transfers. By its nature, passengers change ships with each layover.
* Clipper service books passengers for the stated destination. The ship refuels in minimal time by skimming gas giants or using pre-established fuel caches, and does not stop nor layover at intervening systems. Passengers are not required to change ships for the journey. Occasional passengers along the route meet the clipper as it passes through the system.

|- valign="top"
| Private Merchants & Tramp Liners
| Far Trader
Free Trader
| Starship
| Typically J-2 to J-4
| Smaller worlds with less developed economies may not regularly receive significant interstellar traffic. In such cases, passengers may charter passage with individual captains offering berth on postal union or small trading runs. A tramp is a starship travelling unchartered runs, seeking fame and fortune.
* Travel Passage
|- valign="top"
| Interstellar Yachts
| Private Yacht
| Starship
| Typically J-4 to J-6
| The very wealthy individually maintain personal starships and crew retainers. They travel where and when they want. They are still subject to world or system law and may seek Imperial or other supra-polity sanction before entering certain areas.
|- valign="top"
| Starship Crew
| Assorted
| Starship
| Assorted
| The market can never meet demand for skilled starship crew. A talented Traveller can nearly always find a crew slot to fill.
* Working Passage
|- valign="top"
| Lab Ships & Science Expeditions
| Lab Ship
| Starship
| Typically J-2 to J-4
| Lab ships roam the stars investigating newly discovered, worlds, studying intriguing cosmological phenomena, and exploring the galaxy's mysterious anomalies. Travellers with specific skill sets are always in high demand. Skilled Travellers rarely have any difficulty finding a skilled crewman-specialist berth.
|- valign="top"
| Colony Ships & Colonial Expeditions
| Colony Ship
| Starship
| Typically J-2 to J-4
| As the Imperial Fringe and other frontiers are developed, colony ships and colonial expeditions frequently send message ahead of their route looking for bodies to fill their berths if not at capacity. Due to low berth losses and the unreliability of passengers, many such starships find themselves with unexpected empty slots. Beggars can't be choosers and sometimes signing onto a colony ship is the most expedient way offworld.
|- valign="top"
| Aslan Ihatei
| Colony Ship
| Starship
| Typically J-2 to J-4
| Aslan Clans and cooperatives regularly launch ihatei expeditions looking for fresh land. It is not unknown for Aslan to allow paying passengers to accompany them. Few Travellers would choose this potentially hazardous method, but it is not unknown.
|- valign="top"
| Vargr Wanderlust
| Assorted
| Starship
| Assorted
| In the Vargr Extents, it is almost a rite of passage to join a corsair crew and satisfy one's canidoid travelling curiosity. Outside of the Extents, Vargr often channel this energy into joining starship crews or signing onto colonial expeditions.
|-
|}

Interstellar Exploration Services
Charted Space is but a drop of stars in the vast reaches of Galaxias. There is much to explore, but very few scouts. Non-Imperials performing missions similar to the Scouts are called Explorer Services by the IISS.
| The Imperial Interstellar Scout Service (IISS) is a major service within the Third Imperium, equal in bureaucratic stature to the Imperial Army and the Imperial Navy, although assigned a variety of unique, primarily non-military missions. Many of those missions involve exploratory survey missions.

History & Background (Dossier)
The first Travellers existed long before spaceflight. They were adventurous souls with a curiosity that wouldn't quit. They wouldn't abide the status quo and pushed for more. Such individuals dare to go where others won't. They push out every boundary that they find: circumnavigators of globes, first to flight, interstellar explorers... They have the Traveller Gene.

Travel Zones
Travel Zones are marked areas on star charts indicating the relative safety or danger of a specific stellar system or astrographic area.

Please see the following AAB Library Data articles for more information:
* Travel Zones
** Amber Zone
** Black Zone
** Green Zone
** Interdiction
** Red Zone

Traveller Gene
Most people (indeed, whole species) never leave their homeworld: they never venture out of their gravity well, content to work, play, and even thrive on their homeworld. Some postulate that there is a genetic basis for the drive of some (and the lack of drive in others) to reach beyond the bounds of a single world into the greater universe: a Traveller Gene.

Travel Passage
Not all Travellers traverse the stars with the same comforts... or liabilties. Please see the following AAB articles for more information:
* Low Passage
** Low Lottery
* Middle Passage
* High Passage
* Working Passage

Travelling Societies
Travelling Societies are organizations, usually business entities, providing services to Travellers. These services are intended to make potentially dangerous interstellar travel much more hospitable.

Travel Formulae
Travelling in Charted Space: The travel formulae and diagram used by the Imperial Navy and Scout Service show a typical interplanetary journey, and equations which can determine time required (if distance and acceleration are known), acceleration required (if distance and time are known), and distance travelled (if time and acceleration are known]. All of the formulae use the MKS (meters, kilograms, seconds) unit system, and assume that the ship is undertaking a journey from rest, that it accelerates continuously to midpoint of the trip, and then decelerates to rest again.
! Conveyance
! Speed
* Travel Passage

| Interstellar Yachts
| Private Yacht
| Starship
| Typically J-4 to J-6

Description (Specifications)
A missile is a self-propelled guided weapon launched from a missile rack or a weapons bay. Anti-ship missiles may be utilized as planetary surface bombs or surveillance drones (mechanical and electronics skill would apply in such cases). Large missiles are often referred to as torpedoes.

The weapon produces noise, it generates a visible flash, and is hot.

A turret or bay-launched shipboard missile is approximately size 4 or 5, generally equivalent to the size of a human.

Components
Missile systems are made up of three major sub-systems: the launcher, the delivery sub-system, and the warhead.

Launcher
The launcher is usually little more than a simple rack which holds the missile within its container until launch. Most designs use compressed gases, contained in small tanks located within the base of the missile tube, to push the missile a meter or so clear of the rack while the rocket motor is igniting. The rack is connected to the Gunner's control panel.

Delivery
Once fired, the delivery sub-system takes over, steering the missile towards the target. It is made up of the propulsion system, the guidance controls, and the detonation controls for the warhead.
* The propulsion system is typically liquid or solid fuel thrusters or a gravitic drive.
* The guidance can be controlled directly by the operator via a radio communicator, it can be based around RADAR or other active sensor systems, or it can be homing (by infrared seeking, mass seeking, neutrino seeking, or similar).
* Detonation is controlled by a trigger: detonation systems include contact, proximity, intelligent, and command.

Warhead
Missile warheads fall into three broad categories: Conventional, Unconventional and Nuclear.
* Conventional Warheads include standard high-explosive (HE) and focused force (high-explosive shaped charge); these generally cause surface damage but can also inflict critical hits.
* Unconventional Warheads include non-explosive or even non-weapon payloads. Examples include illumination or signal missiles, message torpedoes, and remote sensor drones.
* Nuclear Warheads include fission, fusion, and enhanced radiation devices: these cause surface damage and radiation effects but can also inflict critical hits. Nuclear warheads are available in yields of between 0.1 kilotons and 10 kilotons. Note that under the Imperial Rules of War, nuclear weapons are reserved for use by Imperial forces only.

Sizes
Standard space combat missiles fall into two size categories:
* Smaller missiles designed to be launched from missile racks. They have a maximum weight of 50 kg and can cost up to Cr50,000 each, though more basic models are substantially cheaper. The standard anti ship missile is 150.0 mm in diameter.
* Larger missiles designed to be launched from missile bays. Many of them range to 450.0 mm to 600.0 mm or larger.

History & Background (Dossier)
Shipboard missiles have been in use since the earliest days of Vilani interstellar travel and remain as a standard weapon system. A huge range of designs are available from weapons dealers across Charted Space. Low population and Non-industrial worlds, for various reasons, cannot locally manufacture missile components: they must be imported, inflating their prices.

Representative Examples & Classes
Missiles are mass produced from standardized components and assembled in starport armories ready for sale. Custom designs of missile can be specified if desired but the Standard Anti-Shipping Missile has become ubiquitous. Some components (specifically warheads) may not be available due to local law level restrictions.

Standard Anti-Shipping Missile
| Tonnage
| The missile has an overall length of 0.98m, a maximum diameter of 0.145m, and a contained internal volume of approximately 0.015 Kiloliters (equivalent to 0.001 starship Tons). It is built in a cylinder configuration and is constructed from lightweight alloys and composite materials. It is fully streamlined and has small airfoil surfaces, improving its atmospheric performance.
* It has a total mass of 50 kg.
* It is rugged and durable and is able to withstand stresses in excess of 5G.
| The missile is unarmored and is not fitted with defensive systems.
|-
| 6.
| Fuel System
| The missile carries 28 kg of solid propellant. The fuel is segregated into 5 increments (burns), permitting the motors to be turned off and restarted if desired.
* For simplicity, each burn is considered to last for approximately 3.5 minutes and to use approximately 5.6 kg of fuel.
* Each burn increases the missiles acceleration by 1G.
|-
| 7.
| Cost
| The basic cost of the missile depends on the Tech Level at which it was manufactured.
* At TL-7 the missile costs Cr31,100.
* At TL-8 (the construction TL), the missile costs Cr16,200.
* At TL-9 the missile costs Cr15,960.

The missile is a standard design. Detailed schematics and architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
|-
| 8.
| Comments
| The missile is contained within a storage tube that has a length of 1m, a diameter of 0.15m, and a mass of 5 kilograms. The container includes integral test circuitry and the missile launch mechanism, consisting of containers of compressed gas that push the missile clear of the tube as the rocket motor ignites.
* The tube is loaded directly into a missile rack.
* The tube is disposed of when the missile is expended.

Different manufacturers give their missiles distinctive surface finishes, though flat dark gray is typical.
* Individual components of the missile carry serial numbers and markings. Many models have corporate logos.

Drone
Mk 42 Recon Drone

The Mk 42 is a recon drone used by the Imperial Navy. They are not front line service units. They are large – almost 2m long by 0.533m in diameter, with a contained volume of approximately 0.45 Kl – and are rather clunky by modern standards. The drone has a capacious compartment in the nose which can house a variety of sensors and cameras. Even though the Navy acquired them as recon drones, marine gunners have managed to adapt a wide array of explosive cargo (including nukes) to fit within the nose compartment. This has turned the drone into a "poor mans torpedo", apparently drawing inspiration from the Mk 41s.
