Vollaostea is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.

  • As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Brevelea Subsector of Matzen Sector.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Diagram of the Vollaostea system.

Mainworld Data[edit]

  • Vollaostea has an orbital period of 62.1 standard days.
  • The planet has a rotational period of 30.54 standard hours.
  • The planet has an axial tilt of 36 degrees.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Vollaostea is a Small World between 2,400km and 4,000km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.1G and 0.17G. The horizon will appear about 2.5km away.

  • The planet has a diameter of 2092 miles / 3347 km
  • Vollaostea has a molten core with a density of 1.02 standard.
  • The surface gravity of Vollaostea is 0.256 that of standard is therefore deemed as a 'low gravity world'.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Vollaostea has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

  • The atmosphere of Vollaostea has been classified as 'standard oxy-nitro mix with pollutants taint'.
  • The pollutants found in the atmosphere are the fungal spores that are every present. These can be harmful to sophonts who breath those spores into their lungs.
  • The average surface temperature of Vollaostea is -61.7c

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Vollaostea has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible.

  • Although there are a small number of seas, lakes etc on the surface of the world these are minority. The majority of water on Vollaostea is contained in vast underground cavernous regions.
  • The surface water is frozen due to the extreme cold as the surface rarely gets warmer than -60c.
  • The molten core of the planet means that below ground the additional warmth creates a humid atmosphere and the water is in a fluid state.
  • The water however is 'tainted' and like the planets atmosphere contains spores from the fungi that grows extensively in the caverns. As a result of this tain the water must be treated and purified before it can be drunk or used in any other way.

Satellites:[edit]

Vollaostea has no satellites.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No information yet available.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

  • Vollaostea has no native sophont life.
  • The planet has thousands of miles of caverns and cave networks below its surface that go deep into the planetary crust. These caverns are considerably warmer an much more humid than the hostile planetary surface. In these caverns thousands of fungi species have developed over millenia.
  • The fungi are found in as many forms and colours as can be imagined with many botanists describing the caverns as a wonder of nature.
  • The fungi have been found to be an incredible resource for both food and pharmaceuticals. It is estimated that less than 10% of the fungi contained in the caverns have so far been categorised and recorded.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

World Starport (St)[edit]

Vollaostea has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Vollaostea does maintain a Type A starport on the planet itself. The starport however is more of a transfit facility that links to an orbital Type A startport located in 'Orbit 5' of the main star in the system.
  • The secondary orbital starport is considerably larger than the facility on the surface and acts as the main transit station for ships headed to the surface of Vollaostea. This has been established due to the hostile conditions caused by both the planetary conditions and the gravitational impacts of the twin stars.
  • There are several extensive periods where travel on and off planet is severely restricted or not possible at all and during this time visitors and other travellers will remain on the orbital startport.

Facilities[edit]

Port facilities within the system include:

  • The planetary starport maintains extensive facilities for storage of materials, fungi and manufactured products for extensive periods.
  • The port hosts a scout facility who not only use the location as a base of operation but also maintain a research capability to study the effects of the trinary system and the gravitational impacts of the twin starts that Vollaostea orbits.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Vollaostea possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Vollaostea is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World Military[edit]

No information yet available.

World Law (L)[edit]

Vollaostea has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: 7 (few)
  • Labor: 5 (hundreds of thousands)
  • Infrastructure: 8 (generally available)
  • Efficiency: +1 (average)

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: +2 (ordinary)

World Demographics (P)[edit]

Vollaostea has a population of c1,000,000

Urbanization[edit]

  • The only major urban area is the startown.
  • The population maintain hundreds of small communities within the caverns that focus on various requirements eg fungal farming, research, pharmaceutical development etc.
  • The facilities are usually either privately owned enterprises or owned by specialist companies. Every facility maintains family areas and they are interconnected via cave networks.
  • Closer to the surface there are road networks of tunnels where the tunnels are large enough and wide enough for vehicles to transit the network. Further away from the surface and in narrow stretches the only form of transit is on foot.
  • There are a small number of large facilities on the surface that have been established to purify the surface water which is far less polluted than the water below the surface. These facilities are connected by road networks that have been put in place whilst the network of pipes etc was established linking the water purification plants to the starport.

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogeneity: 6 (harmonious)
  • Acceptance: 8 (friendly)
  • Strangeness: 8 (very confusing)
  • Symbols: A (abstruct)
