Virshash is a high-population, pre-rich world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Virshash has a notably dense core and a diameter of somewhat over 16,000 km, giving it a gravity of 1.75g.

  • It is part of a relatively close double-star system.
  • The second star of the pair produces high levels of radiation, which Virshash's dense atmosphere only partially blocks.

Native Sophont: Virushi[edit]

The Virushi are among the largest intelligent races encountered by Humaniti. With quasi-centauroid bodies nearly 3.0 meters long, standing around 1.8 meters at the shoulder, and weighing around a ton, they are a formidable sight; however this effect is balanced by their well-justified reputation for pacifism.

History & Background / Dossier[edit]

The Virushi are valued Imperial citizens, but find the idea of the Imperium a little confusing, since they themselves have no concept of hierarchy or imposition. The most effective Imperial officials on Virshash are those skilled at phrasing Imperial policy in the form of polite advice.

Languages[edit]

Imperial High / Landed Nobility[edit]

Virshash, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of three members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.

World Starport[edit]

Virshash has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Technology Level[edit]

Virshash possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Government[edit]

Virshash is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

Virushi have adopted the Human word “rule”, but to them it means little beyond “what the Humans claim to do to all those worlds”. The nearest words in their own tongue mean either “exert physical control over an object” (they use the same word for “ownership”) or “provide respected advice to.”

Instead of government as such, the Virushi have powerful computer systems, paid for by modest taxes and import-export duties, which analyze social trends and periodically suggest courses of action.

World Military[edit]

The nearest thing that the Virushi have to a military force is a set of emergency response teams, who handle disaster relief and search-and-rescue. That said, specialist alien relations units within these teams have access to (mostly nonlethal) heavy weaponry.

World Economy[edit]

A Virushi business will ask a fair price; no sensible Human trader bothers trying to hagggle with a Virushi, who will cheerfully take hours explaining why the price is not going to change.

Trade Data[edit]

The Virushi pay for their imports by selling small-volume, high-quality manufactures (their safety standards are excellent), as well as minerals (Virshash is dense with plenty of metals), and a few specialized agricultural products.

Historical Data[edit]

Individuals exchanging information about food sources was the origin of Virushi language. The sheer quantity and variety of food that a proto-Virushi needed forced this species into a solitary, wide-ranging pattern of foraging -- after all, they were able to defend themselves from most dangers, without help -- but even aside from questions of reproduction, they found considerable advantages in cooperation. Cooperative organization was never coercive or hierarchical; the race lacked agressive instincts, and individual Virushi had to be able to wander off alone on foraging expeditions, from which they simply wouldn’t return if they had no good reason to. Their society had to actively reward cooperative behaviour, rather than assume its necessity. Language therefore developed a system of deeply respectful etiquette combined with detailed practical information; to Human perceptions, it translated as something akin to a textbook performed by melodramatic sycophants.
