Udusis is a rich world with a shirt-sleeve atmosphere and a balance of available surface water. The system supports a population in the 100s of millions, which makes it too urbanized to be an agricultural world. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Udusis Subsector of Empty Quarter Sector and in the Domain of Antares. Udusis, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of an Imperial knight (the Imperial representative to the world) and a baronet, and the fiefdoms of a baron and a viscount. All four are members of the Imperial Landed Nobility who oversee affairs regarding the world at an Interstellar and Imperial level. 40% of the world's population is the Major Race Vargr.

  • This world was once known as Giimkirla.

History and Background[edit]

This is a world with beautiful bones, populated by people with pinched hearts. There is more going for the world than the locals can see: a rich biosphere, and a stable, resilient peace between the humans and the Vargr. But if all you see are missed glories and lost hopes... if a world only pines for what it does not have, while envying the more successful cultures... well, you won’t get anywhere fast. Alvin Plummer. "The Preferred Worlds of the Empty Quarter, 993 Imperial." Stellar Reaches 21 (2013): 62.

Udusis was one of the Glorious Twelve, the term given to the twelve human systems that stood against the Vargr Pillaging.

Udusis had to bear a two-century long occupation beinning around -1700, until the Vargr oppressor was finally smashed in a ferocious uprising in the -1500s, leaving only a tiny Vargr population surviving the purges.

The less than 20,000 Vargr that survived the overthrow of Vargr rule has managed to multiply and multiply, despite their lowly social status. By year 0 Imperial, the Vargr numbering ~30% of the local population of 60 million, they threatened to set off a major civil war, disrupting long-term Imperial plans of building up the system into a centre of commerce and power. Noble negotiators had to deal with widespread xenophobia (among both Vargr and humaniti) as they hammered out a deal between human and Vargr representatives. A set of powersharing and autonomy agreements between the various parties was signed in 47 Imperial, which (with extensive modifications) remain the basis of Vargr-human relations as of today, almost a thousand years later. Despite this triumph in diplomacy, Udusis never fulfilled their Imperial destiny, preferring to keep their distance from interstellar society.

During the late Civil War era, a pirate band called “The Opie Corporation” controlled the world. A major battle fought here (Battle of Udusis, 79-627) let to changed in Imperial strategy, making the Imperial reconquest of the Six Subsectors easier.

Originally a small colony established in the late Rule of Man, Udusis thrived during the Long Night and now claims a mixed population of three billion humans and Vargr. As the world itself is self-supporting, being quite Earth-like (or Lair-like, in the eyes of its Vargr inhabitants), the people of Udusis have little need for contact with offworlders. While not exactly xenophobic, the local population is not typically open to offworlder contact and so do not maintain active starports. The Udusis world government, known as the World Directorate, does provide a number of paved fields near its capital city for visiting Imperial delegations and the occasional trader willing to interact with the conservative mindset of the Udusis people.

Kasaina is a continental government, a sub-division of the planetary state. Within Kasaina is the Free City of Layamon, whose rule is currently disputed between the local city government and the ruling noble line, who has returned to rule after a quarter of a millennium.
