Source of power
The source of power for a government is who ultimately makes the decisions about laws and policies. There are three broad groups for this source of decisions.
- Autocracy
- A system of government where supreme power is concentrated to a single person or polity. The decision of this person or group are not subjected to legal restraints as the group defines the law.
- Democracy
- Democracy, meaning "rule of the people", is a system of government where citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives from among themselves to form a governing body. The citizens resolve conflicts and determine laws and leadership by voting.
- Oligarchy
- Oligarchy, meaning "rule of the few", is a form of power structure in which power rests with a small number of people. Like the autocracy the group decides and defines the laws without constraints.
