Inconsistencies in canon[edit]

I have both of these books(ha-both are pre 1986).The one odd angry untainted brain cell that fired on this one always remembers wondering why?...-The Krakens are native to Forboldn (world) (a size 8 world)-the very next line mentions that "...(Tree Krakens) can be found on many small low gravity worlds(yeah, and Knorbes (world) is size 7,but wait for it).As far as I know (and my sources are kranky old),the little fellers aren't mentioned anywhere else-as in the discriptions of the multiple small LGWrlds you can easily reach from here(i.e. Allel,Feri,Uakye, and perhaps Whanga).

The Kinunir-1979 (-ahh, I've only got a second printing on that one)anyway,in Kinunir all of the rumors lead to Knorbes, a size...( yup-but I already told ya that)-and a(mostly) restricted area to hunt-which yes,is a plot device. The library section in the back(which I think might have been the very first "Library Data" we ever saw) mentions rather off-handedly that the krakens are common to several worlds in the subsector, and has a wonderful entry about Forboldn and that ill fated project(Now this would be the planet to run a crooked lottery on would'nt it-planetary shares for an easy life off world...)

...but manages not even an off hand mention of an ANAGATHIC (liver burger) pouncer wandering for "free" in Forboldn's vast CO2 outback( and being "farmy" myself...ifn the critters so easy raise "on small low gravity worlds" why does'nt some duke I know have a ranch with'em dripping off the trees(hmmm-sounds pretty good-maybe I should use that idea).So...size7,size8 (native grav),but commonly found on (which) low grav worlds, hunted only on the one planet with the Bronzes looking down your throat-but wandering free-un-shot at(yup-'merican),and even unmentioned everywhere else.

Now that I sat there and reread this... I think of when the books actually came out-that's right,The Kinunir was first because we had never seen the Regina subsector before(ha-more angry than I thought) maybe the "stew" that was Marches wasn't finshed yet-sure might taste different heated up again...

I have the old books too, and I wondered about these inconsistencies too. The first point where I noticed something odd was on the Knorbes page, which calls the six kg creature "a large animal hunted for sport." Six kilograms is about the size of an above average house cat. I could imagine people hunting a six kg creature for sport, but only if it's a wily pouncer and challenging to find.
As for the anagathic properties, maybe only tree krakens found in their native Knorbes habitat are useful, and then only with the benefit of TL15 processing. Maybe they need to be captured alive, kept alive during transit to the TL15 world, and they're difficult to keep alive in captivity.
