Talk:Deneb (star)

Notes (2007)[edit]

Deneb is way out of place with estimates from 640 to 2,250 parsecs distance from earth, Traveller has it at ~200 pc. At this distance Deneb would have an apparent magnitude of -2.2 (instead of 1.25 or 25 times brighter) making it the brightest star in the sky (after Sol), instead of the 19th brightest or about the brightness of Jupiter.

From Vland (~65 pc) this would be magnitude -4.7, visible at daylight (about the same brightness of Venus).

From Regina (32 pc) or Mora (20 pc) Deneb would be magnitude -6.2 or -7.2 (approaching the brightness of the quarter moon) Dcorrin 14:30, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

It has been a long known fact that almost all of the real known stars that are also listed in Traveller are not in the right positions. This is one example, another is the Alpha Crucis Sector, also named for a bright star which isn't actually in the sector at all. Chris Thrash produced a Known Star List, as an attempt to resolve the same issue. Many of these were due to incorrect distance estimate at the time the material was written and non-astronomers making that-looks-about-right guesses. I have no suggestion about resolving this issue except through a Meta note about the star's true position. But the brightness of Deneb would be a cool thing to include in the original article.Tjoneslo 15:40, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Even if you reduced Deneb to 4% of its original brightness, it would still be daylight visible in every system in Deneb, Spinward Marches, Corridor, Reft, Tuglikki, Gvurrdon, Provence, Gushemege, and Trojan Reach sectors. Deneb is a variable star, and could change brightness over a few thousand year. Tjoneslo 20:28, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Notes (2016)[edit]

An early hand-drawn map of Charted Space by GDW (included among extras on the MT CD-ROM) places Deneb in the Delta Quadrant of Viajlefliez Sector corespinward of the Zhodani Consulate border. So they apparently were aware of the correct distance, but then changed it for some reason on the published map.
