Possible definition (Can't open it here at work) Sstefan 11:46, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

The true definitions are in GURPS Traveller: Rim of Fire (p60-61 sidebar) and GURPS Traveller: Planetary Survey 1 - Kamsii. The forum page is mostly talking about the Authentics movement. Tjoneslo 12:13, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Looks like a trip into the pages....

but, would you be so kind as to post those forum pages here as additional background?Sstefan 13:12, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

The thing I hate most about the "Authenticist" movement in GURPS Traveller is that they are right way too often. We are talking three thousand years, here! With one huge die-back (the Long Night), and hundreds of bizarre permutations made with throwback colonies. There is just no way they should be so accurate. (Besides, it just isn't as much fun!)

Any knowledge loss of past history lies in small details. An example is historians know more about Rome/Roman army than 50 years ago who knew more than 100 years ago, who knew more than 200 years ago. Increased leisure time allows more persons to take up scholarly pursuits resulting in more ancient texts deciphered. If anything the digital age will leave more information for future generations, but they will have a nightmare sifting out the dross of the internet and long lasting architecture is not our hallmark, so few structures will survive the centuries. In an old JTAS Bestiary a Bloodvark was introduced as a tracking beast. It was called a Hoover, no one knows why, i.e. vacuum cleaner company long out of business.

(This devolves into the usual argument about long term data storage).

Authenticists are both a way to keep the Sollies in check and also a way for Sollies to do something other than be SolSec loonies or Solomani First! racists. This way they're still Loonie but in a custard pie in the face while wearing a tophat and motley sort of way. Any screw up on your part is attributable to lost or distorted info or just bad research.

Oh and don't go to Romanworld if you like your TL-15 fresher. They take things a bit too serious on their interpretation of Roman hygiene! Which reminds me, plunder shamelessly from every Star Trek: TOS episode that featured a ripoff of some culture or genre. Crib shamelessly from Stargate SG-1, GURPS-Infinate Worlds, and Dr. Who. And don't forget Authenticists try to experience more than just Earth cultures: Dispora Solomani, Vilani and Minor Human, and alien cultures so there's plenty of room for whatever the GM can come up or shamelessly crib.

I redirected this to the Authentic movement article, which is the original definition cribbed from the original source. Tjoneslo 14:50, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
