A bounty hunter is someone who pursues criminals or fugitives through interstellar space for a living. Rewards are typically offered by various law enforcement authorities for the return of these fugitives to specific locations.

Some starships qualify as Bounty Hunter Vessels.

In the Imperium, there are two principle ways that bounties are created, though only one of them is legal.

Private enforcement of public laws[edit]

First a citizen has to ask an Imperium magistrate to issue a warrant for the person's arrest. With the warrant in hand, the citizen may offer a bounty.

Suspects must be taken alive as bounties are not licenses to kill. They are a way to alleviate some of the Imperium's staffing shortages. Bounty hunters are licensed and must follow the same laws as official law enforcement agents.

Once a suspect is delivered for trial, the bounty is paid out regardless if a conviction is obtained.

If the suspect is proven innocent, the original applicants may be subject to a lawsuit and/or criminal charges for filing a false report. [1]

Corporate Justice[edit]

Corporations often have little interest in the slow moving legal system. Especially when their own goals may not be legal. So "wet work" agents are often employed to kidnap or assassinate people that the corporations find especially inconvenient.

However this is risky and expensive. Normally corporate agents restrict themselves to less extreme forms of retribution such fabricating evidence of fraud or generating public scandals.

Blackmail is also not out of the question, especially if their target had access to valuable information. The original offense may even be fabricated itself to justify the blackmail. [1]
