Phaln is a poor, non-agricultural, industrial, high-population desert hellworld, with a billion or more sophonts struggling to survive in a inhospitable environment.

• Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
• This world has no free-standing water.
• As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
• It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
• Despite this world's industrial prowess, the world remains poor. Some blame it on the high prices of food, which must be imported. Others blame the nature of a hellworld. Whatever this reason, something needs to change in order for this world to prosper.
• It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Shire Subsector of Gushemege Sector in the Domain of Vland.
• This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
• The world serves as the subsector capital with the significant extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
• It is an Xboat hub.
• This world has a colony at Joyrest.
• It is a member of the Gushemege Main.

Phaln is a Meso World between 5,600km and 7,200km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.32G and 0.46G. The horizon will appear about 3.6km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Phaln has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Respirator Combination Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Phaln has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Phaln has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

Phaln has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

• -4045 to -2204: the Ziru Sirka claims and settles worlds across the region.
• -2404 to -2215: the Interstellar Wars.
• -2204 to -1776: the Rule of Man administers the worlds of the region.
• -1776 to 0: the Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area and some worlds become barren.
• The Year 0: the Third Imperium is founded.
• 300-420: the Imperial First Survey charts the system.
• 604-622: the Civil War.
• 624: the Express Boat Network is established.
• 995-1065: the Imperial Second Survey charts the system.

Later Historical Eras

New Era

Based around industrialized, high-population Phaln, the Duchy of the same name consisted of eleven worlds in the Trailing-Rimward corner of Gushemege. Formed initially as a mutual defense and support alliance, the Duchy was incorporated by the Fourth Imperium as an alternative to fighting its not inconsequential defense forces. A period of intense negotiations resulted in the formation of one of the most autonomous (some would say rebellious) groupings within the Imperium. Over time, trust was built between the Imperium and its newest vassal; however, its people retain their stubborn and insubordinate streak.
