Pen-Latol's is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Pen-Latol's is a binary star system.

  • The primary is an orange main sequence.
  • The secondary is a red main sequence.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

The mainworld orbits within the primary star's Habitable Zone.

  • It lies within the zones prime H region.
  • It receives moderate levels of stellar energy.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Pen-Latol's is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Pen-Latol's has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Pen-Latol's has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

A basic map of Pen-Latol's, based on partial data, showing only the division between land and water.

  • The chart requires updating.
  • Locally, far more detailed maps may be available.
  • Verified updated charts are constantly sought.
  • Detailed survey data commands premium prices.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Extensive native life. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

Local fauna is categorised by natives according to diet and general niche, not by actual biological relations:

  • Belbrantol: Carrion-eaters
  • Calbrantol: The "siren of the jungle"
  • Cheabrantol: Intermittent hooved herbivores
  • Dacbrantol: Insectile reducers
  • Esabrantol: Ambush feeder trappers.
  • Frobrantol
  • Isibrantol: Climbing omnivores
  • Jabrantol: Apex predators, killers
  • Krubrantol: Carnivorous pouncers
  • Morbrantol: Pursuit predators
  • Reabrantol: Clever imitator predators
  • Sarbrantol: Filter-feeders
  • Tribrantol: Large carnivores
  • Wybrantol: Grazing herbivores

Offworlders have categorised complex animal life into three categories, by shared ancestry:

  • Tesa Fron: Animals in this class are identified by having six limbs and a thick hide that serves as armour and for temperature regulation. They have a triad reproductive system, with a male, a female, and a carrier that nurtures the egg from fertilization to birth.
  • Kisarter: These have a variable number of limbs. They have no solid skeleton, rather a skeleton made of flexible protein compounds. They can grow limbs as needed and regenerate them if severed. Kisartor reproduce by means of a bud that grows on the end of a limb, which matures and detaches itself to move to a new locale.
  • Haralun: Animals of this class are four-limbed and have a fluid erectable plumage that acts as a heat exchanger.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Pen-Latol's is a backwater that only occasionally sees visitors.

  • Information about the system is limited.
  • The resources of the mainworld are being exploited.

It is the homeworld of the Cleashitar, the remnant population of a far larger extinct civilization.

  • The surface of the world is dotted with ruins and remains that are believed to be thousands of years old.
  • Almost no research into the origins and history of the Cleashitar has taken place.

Note that social data, though only 40 years old, may be out of date: previously undocumented groups may now inhabit the system and maintain their own culture, forms of government, and systems of law.

  • Verified updated data is constantly sought.

Deepspace Jump Hub[edit]

Pen-Latol's is the namesake of the Latol Jump Hub facility in Hex Phoenix 2318.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Pen-Latol's has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Pen-Latol's has a population of 600,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
  • Almost the entire population consists of Cleashitar.
Cleashitar Sophont Species 2.jpg

Urbanization[edit]

A few large urban centers are surrounded by smaller satellite communities.

  • Inhabited areas are dotted across the world.
  • Much of the surface of the world remains as wilderness.

The ruins and remains of an extinct civilization can be found all across the world.

  • At its height, the former Cleashitar civilization had a population numbering in the hundreds of millions.
  • It was technologically sophisticated, reckoned to be at least TL–4.
  • The reasons for its demise are unknown.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Pen-Latol's possesses a Technology Level of TL–5.

World Government (G)[edit]

Pen-Latol's is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

World Law (L)[edit]

Pen-Latol's has no law in practice. It is an Anarchy. On many worlds, this by itself justifies an Amber Zone advisory. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: -2 (very unimportant)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: 7 (few)
  • Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
  • Infrastructure: 2 (extremely limited)
  • Efficiency: -5 (extremely poor)

World Culture[edit]

  • Homogeneity: 1 (monolithic)
  • Acceptance: 3 (xenophobic)
  • Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
  • Symbols: 1 (extremely concrete)

Tribal Nations[edit]

Tribes include the following:

  • Bret-Mel-Tip: These people wander the savannah in wind-powered wagons, and are known as the Children of the Sail. Mock combat rituals are held at a yearly festival celebrating the onset of the monsoon season.
  • Sans-Mel-Cam: This tribe hunts beasts of the savannah from the backs of six-legged herbivores which they have domesticated. They use traditional bone and wood heavy composite bows which each hunter makes in a long-established ceremony.
  • Tril-Mel-Volg: These are herders of large animals called Lulth (200 kilograms). These creatures still migrate naturally but are kept in a herd by riding tribesmen.
