The effects of Pediica Spice is to cause a rapid increase in brain activity while slowing down the metabolism to a crawl. Many users enter what appears to be a catatonic state, unable to move or respond to external stimuli. The parts of the brain that govern imagination, art, and abstract thought go into overdrive. The catatonia and hallucinations generally last for half an hour. Long term exposure to spice can lead to permanent addiction and catatonia.
Pediica spice derives from the metamorphosed shells of a crustacean native to Pediica (Dagudashaag 2938). The Shagahi crustacea filled the world's equatorial oceans and, on their deaths, dropped the to the sea floor. Over time, with the correct pressure and temperature, the chemical changes produce the hallucinogenic powder. Later geographic uplifts make these layers more accessable to mining.
Harvesting the spice is a difficult and time-consuming affair, made more complex because the drug is illegal on most worlds. Pediica itself is classified as a planetary war memorial, the mines closed, and access guarded by the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service. When available a gram packet sells for Cr1,000 and will provide two 'trips'.
