Description (Specifications)[edit]
An ancient Vargr organization, this fleet has evolved and changed many times since its inception in -1862 during a period of civil war.
Mission (Goals)[edit]
Worlds of the Ngath Confederation pay taxes to ensure that their star systems are kept free from rival corsairs and hostile governmental agencies.
Doctrine & Strategy (Operations)[edit]
System defense assets patrol their home systems. Occasionally, for unified offensive operations, the eight large battle tenders will be called upon to transport some asteroid monitors for system attack and occupational and/or orbital bombardment operations. The majority of these low tech asteroids are intended to discourage raiders. They are not expected to slow or stop modern fleet actions.
The cruisers carry the largest meson spinal mounted guns that local technology levels will permit. The serve to anchor small jump capable patrol task forces that constantly cruise in search of foreign intruders. Corsair bands are shown no mercy. Invasions from larger foreign governments would require a massed fleet action that this navy is ill prepared for. They rely on their own abilities as blockade runners, smugglers and commerce raiders to cripple enemy naval efforts and actively avoid set piece battles. Winner take all, is not their style. Gradual erosion of enemy infrastructure is seen as a better long term strategy.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Ships of a myriad of classes are procured at the planets where they are stationed, when possible. Planets with class A shipyards build the jump capable ships of the fleet. Transports and tenders are used to deploy system defense ships to their stations in systems without boat yards. The tech levels of the ships match the planets where they are stationed so local resources can be used to maintain them when possible. The size of the forces deployed varies with the tax base available to procure the ships. Patrols mounted from the planets with jump capable vessels are charged with protecting neighboring worlds. Unprotected planets pay fees to ensure that patrols are frequent as well as their budgets can afford.
Tables of Ranks (Hierarchies)[edit]
The Ngath Confederation originally created a charter that called for a modest officer corps to consist of four captains, four commanders, 30 lieutenants, and various other non-line officers. As of -1862, the First Vargr Congress expanded this to four admirals, ten captains, 31 commanders, 100 first lieutenants, 25 second lieutenants, and 20 ship masters. All in line for promotion; additionally, there were to be 12 paymasters, 40 assistant paymasters, 22 surgeons, 15 passed assistant surgeons, 30 assistant surgeons, one engineer-in-chief, and 12 senior engineers. The act also provided for promotion on merit: "All the Admirals, four of the Captains, five of the Commanders, twenty-two of the First Lieutenants, and five of the Second Lieutenants, shall be appointed solely for gallant or meritorious conduct during the war." From these humble beginnings the force has continued to grow. They are handicapped by limited jump range and dissimilar logistical requirements from the range of technology these ships employ.
