Name for any type of ship designed to skim a gas giant for commercial purposes. Derivation unknown.
A typical highdiver is a non-starship with powerful engines and large holding tanks. The crew compliment is normally small and has little in the way of creature comforts. Flight profile for a highdiver consists of several rapid passes through a gas gaint's atmosphere. Large intakes scoop up the gasses which are then transferred to holding tanks. When full, the ship returns to an orbiting refinery where the cargo is processed into useable products.
While not the norm, some highdivers have been designed with on-board processors and/or jump drives, but this is not usually done as it restricts the amount of useable cargo space.
