Durendal is an an agricultural and garden world with a shirt-sleeve atmosphere and a balance of available surface water. The system has a population between 1 million and 100 million. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.

Astrography & Planetology[edit]

Durendal is a member of the Spinward Main.

Durendal is tidally locked to its primary, Roland, and orbits at a distance of 0.23 AU.

Durendal is one of the most terrestrial planets in the subsector. Away from the volcanic mountain ranges, portions of the planet are very pleasant, and the Durendals have settled into the sort of yeoman farming that is the ideal for many Sword Worlders. The thin soil needs careful maintenance, but the volcanic ash of the previous millennia makes good feedstock for fertilizer, and Durendal’s farms are quite productive.[2]

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Prior to the Fifth Frontier War Durendal was a member of the Sword Worlds Confederation, but following the war Durendal became part of the Imperial Client state known as the Border Worlds and experienced considerable internal political upheaval.

Durendal rejoined the Sword Worlds in 1116.

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Durendal has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Isgorod is the name of the Downport. It is a hub of high-tech activity but is surrounded by primitive yeoman-owned villages that span for several kilometres.

World Population (P)[edit]

70,000,000

World Government (G)[edit]

Durendal is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be monarchy, with titles passed to family members. Or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Or the organization may be more typical organization with positions of power inherited.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

Durendal has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Durendal possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Society[edit]

Due to the preoccupation with perfection that characterises Durendal society, every farmer has a system that they're convinced is a little better than their neighbour's, and competition to be the most productive is fierce. Governance is feudal in nature, with free landowners owing allegiance to a jarl and the jarls ruled over by a monarch who uses the title hertug.

Language[edit]

Other Data[edit]

The naval base is guarded by a squadron of light Sveinhelm class Assault Carriers which operate with Biter class Close Escorts.

Command Area Durendal has the largest area of responsibility of Sword Worlder Commands. Initiatives to divide the command and set up a second control apparatus further rimward -- perhaps at Biter or Sting -- have been rejected on several occasions.

Durendal is the sword of Roland, as legendary paladin and partially historical officer of Charlemagne in French epic literature.
