Rancke Notes (2007)[edit]

The big problem with the 40th Squadron is that it doesn't have even one highish-population, decent-tech world. Its capital has 600,000 inhabitants (and it's balkanized, BTW) and the six worlds put together amounts to less than six million. It simply doesn't have the strength to be a thorn in the Imperium's side, let alone supply two fleets. Even if you say that part of both fleets were composed of 'volunteers' from elsewhere (very likely), the 40th Squadron doesn't even have the strength to provide the skeleton of two fleets.

IMO the 40th Squadron is in dire need of a canon revision. My suggestion would be to give Gvurrdon 1738 (the capital) a population level of 8 and a Class A starport (to provide the ships and the TL13 ground troops[*]) and Gvurrdon 1839 a population level of 7 (to provide the TL12 ground troops[*].

[*] Both worlds would have a military TL one level above their High Common TLs.

(While one is already messing with canon, I think it might also be worthwhile to redistribute the populations to give the ones with breathable air bigger populations than the airless rockballs, but that goes beyond fixing an obvious canon problem and into 'changing things to fit a preconception'.)

Razmus Notes (2009)[edit]

I can't remember now where I'd originally gotten the idea, but I thought the 40th Squadron was a Vargr puppet state propped up by Zhodani support. The worlds now claimed by the 40th provide some minimal financial support as protection money, but are individually governed by local charismatic leaders.
