Xelan Subsector is Subsector D of Far Home Sector.

Description / Specifications

Xelan Subsector is named for the Xelan system and its red giant primary star. The majority of the Subsector lies within the Moat Rifts. The Protectorate of Leset, a paranoid and autocratic Mantlerist state, occupies the systems of the Ritos Cluster, lying within its rimward regions.

Nebula

• The Cauldron Nebula, lying within Cauldron Sector, some 78 parsecs to coreward-trailing, can be seen as a star-studded luminous region in night-time skies from all of the worlds of the Subsector.

Bright Stars

• Basilisk's Eye (1723 Tarchon Sector). The extremely luminous white supergiant star, lying around 128 parsecs to coreward-trailing, can be clearly seen from all of the worlds of the Subsector.
• Demon's Eye (1621 Far Home Sector). The intensely luminous blue supergiant star, lying approximately 16 parsecs to spinward-rimward at its closest point, can be clearly seen from all of the worlds of the Subsector even in daylight.

Population: 6.712.billion Sophonts.

• Humaniti (Human races)
  • Solomani (Major Race): 4.811 billion (71.68% of the population), descended from human refugees who fled the Destruction of Terra. They refer to themselves as Terrans.

• Other Non-Human Races:
  • Hoppers: an estimated 200.464 million "Distant" Hoppers (2.99% of the population) typically within human settlements. Most have never visited Fedan, their ancestral homeworld, and many have developed unique customs and habits.
  • Jellyfish: approximately 1.7 billion.
  • Temelik: approximately 75,000, found throughout human-controlled space.

Native Sophonts

• Jellyfish, reclusive aquatic sophonts native to Axasorsa but also found on Kedol.

Linguistic Topography

The following languages are the most commonly spoken within Xelan Subsector:

• Anglish The language of the Firstworlds. A direct descendant of Fleet Anglic, widely spoken throughout the Distant Fringe. Most people know a few words and phrases of Anglish.
• Orometi. The language of the Protectorate of Leset and the Worlds of The Leader, the language the defunct Empire and a common language throughout the region. It is derived from Bengali and other south asian languages of old Terra.

Polities

The Protectorate of Leset is a monolithic impersonal bureaucracy headed by the Protector. It is a Mantlerist state – the first to emerge in the Distant Fringe – and is relatively politically isolated. The Protectorate sees itself as a society of equals striving to bring equality and liberty to the downtrodden masses. However, some are far more equal than others – those in positions of power and influence enjoy advantages that the general population do not. The state is repressive and paranoid. A brutal pro-Mantlerist purge is underway and those deemed to be dissidents may suffer arrest, interrogation and incarceration for activities "against the interests of the State and the Citizens".

The Worlds of The Leader is bombastic, militaristic and expansionist and is ruled by a social elite descended from Fives. It casts itself as a center of culture and excellence with a proud history and rich and noble traditions. Public buildings are monolithic and pristine, and are bedecked with flags and banners and the symbols of The Leader. Security within the state is extremely tight and military patrols and checkpoints are commonplace. Public announcements are broadcast featuring the proclamations of The Leader and filled with anti-Mantlerist propaganda. Despite its carefully maintained public image the state is in crisis, with shortages of almost everything, including basic life support supplies, foodstuffs and fuels. The entitled and increasingly detached ruling elite, descended from Fives, find themselves at odds with the deprived and repressed masses of the Gens, who increasingly display Mantlerist leanings.

• The Vigs, the feared intelligence arm of the Worlds of The Leader, are active within the Subsector. They maintain a network of informants, handlers and sympathisers and move against anybody they deem to be an enemy of the State. They are able to call on military units as required. They particularly target Mantlerist organisations or anyone suspected of having Mantlerist sympathies.

Interstellar Relations

The Worlds of The Leader maintains control of the Ordin Subsystem, the far companion in the Solitude Trinary Star System.

The Protectorate of Leset dislikes the corrupt Firstworlds, though its downtrodden and exploited Gens will soon rise up and throw off the yoke of elitism. The barbaric and imperialist Worlds of The Leader is despised.

Xelan, subsector D of Far Home has 15 worlds, of which 12 have native gas giants. The estimated population for the subsector is 6 billion sophonts (not necessarily humans). There are two High population (Hi) worlds, one Moderate population (Ph) world, six Non-industrial (Ni) worlds, five Low population (Lo) worlds, and no Barren (Ba) worlds. There are three Agricultural (Ag) worlds versus one Pre-Agricultural (Pa) world, and no Non-Agricultural (Na) worlds. There are no Rich (Ri) worlds versus no Industrial (In) worlds. There is one Asteroid (As) belt, one Desert (De) world, two Garden (Ga) worlds, one Ice-capped (Ic) world, three Poor (Po) worlds, one Vacuum (Va) world, and one Water (Wa) or Ocean (Oc) world. There are no Naval bases in the subsector, no Scout bases, and no Way stations. The highest population world is Oromet (Far Home 2710). The highest tech level is B at Oromet (Far Home 2710). The average technology level is 6 (with most between 2 and 9).

The Protectorate in Xelan Subsector has jurisdiction over six worlds with a population of 5 billion. The highest population world is Oromet (Far Home 2710). The highest tech level is B at Oromet (Far Home 2710). The average technology level is 7 (with most between 4 and 9).

There is one unclaimed, largely unexplored system in Xelan Subsector.

History & Background

Xelan Subsector saw very limited activity by humans prior to the establishment of the Third Confederation, and what little development there was abruptly ended with the onset of the Dark Age, nearly two thousand years ago. Almost all expansion and growth within the region is relatively modern, occuring following the end of the Dark Age and the rise of Development Organizations.

• A strong social divide exists between wealthy and aristocratic Fives, descended from the original settlers and crew of the Last Armada, and Gens, individuals whose ancestors were grown in GenPods and raised by Hoppers. Those of Fives ancestry are uniformly despised. They are regarded as parasites and leeches at best and may suffer persecution and abuse.

Some of the more important historical events that have affected this area include:

• 2255AD: The Last Armada arrives in the Demon Cluster. The Seven Colonies are established. Year One.
• 2500AD: The monolithic and anti-expansionist Second Confederation is founded. Xelan Subsector sees no settlement or development other than a few military outposts and listening stations.
• 3359AD: 1st Civil War begins. Refugees from the conflict seek shelter within the Subsector.
• 3398AD: 8th Civil War begins.
• 3400AD: The Vilani Scare. Fall of the Second Confederation. End of the Civil Wars. The Dissolution period.
• 3440AD: Third Confederation established. Some limited settlement or development within the Subsector.
• 3730AD: Voyagers arrive and devastate the Subsector. The Dark Age begins.
• 4549AD: The Voyagers depart and the Dark Age ends. The Renaissance sees the first steps back into space.
