The Wanderers or Wandering People are a technologically sophisticated Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance.
They are known for their sublight Worldships, which are active in Gateway Sector and its surrounds.
Description (Specifications)
Wanderers seem very alien to humans. Their insectoid origins are obvious, and the way their bodies are constructed results in a way of moving that constantly surprises and unnerves human observers.
Juvenile Wanderers have wings; in the vast majority of cases these wings drop off when the Wanderer reaches maturity at age 10.
Languages
Their language is rather difficult to translate. As a result most Wanderers that interact with humans adopt a common human name like Bob, Alice or Eneri rather than attempting to translate their own.
History & Background (Dossier)
The Wanderers entered (actually reentered, see below) the Gateway region around year 320, after crossing the Lesser Rift in their Worldships. These Worldships are gigantic non-jump-capable vessels, each home to a large (the actual size is unknown) community of Wanderers. From the Worldships, Jump-capable vessels range across the region, trading and visiting various worlds. The Wanderers have set up a number of small enclaves on worlds in Ley and Gateway, from which they conduct trade. Humans are very rarely invited into these enclaves.
Wanderer technology seems to be equivalent to the Imperial TL–12, though few devices have been examined by experts, and the Wanderer way of doing things is very different to the approach used by humans and most other sentients.
Wanderers are peaceable people who will fight in self-defense but more normally respond to threats with negotiation and/or a withdrawal. When they do fight, their warriors are ferocious, and not deterred by casualties.
The native name of the Wandering People isn't known, as they don't usually discuss their society or religion with outsiders. They are commonly known simply as Wanderers.
True History
The origins of the Wandering People are unknown to other races, and some suspect (incorrectly) that they are from outside Charted Space or else speculate (also incorrectly) that they are a Major Race. In fact, the Wanderers are remnants of a people destroyed in a Ziru Sirka debacle, their jump drives of Vilani origin (and in turn the "missing link" in Luriani acquisition of the drive).
They were originally native to Lirguu.
