Veola is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Sarudis Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data

Alcanta-Veola System

The primary is Alcanta, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.352 Sols, a mass of 0.774 Sols, and a diameter of 1.168 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a trace atmosphere inner world, and (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld. (III) Veola orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV-I) a vacuum worldlet, (IV-II) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (V) a ringed large gas giant, (VI-I) a small gas giant, (VI-II) a small ice giant, and (IX) an exotic atmosphere bigworld form the outer system – orbital positions (VII) and (VIII) are empty. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(III) Veola

(III) Veola is designated the mainworld. It orbits Alcanta at a mean distance of 0.81 AU (121.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 250 days 19 hours and a rotation period of 22 hours. The axial tilt is 13 degrees. Veola has a diameter of 10,177 km, a density of 4.78 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.69 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, with a mean surface pressure of 0.61 bar and a composition of 79% nitrogen (N2), 19% oxygen (O2), 1% argon, (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 44% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.2m. Mean surface temperature: 6°C. The climate is rated as Cold and experiences minor seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is slow and moderate weather systems driven by the star and the seas drift across the globe.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Total surface area: 325 million km², Land surface area: 182 million km², Water surface area: 143 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Alcanta-Veola System

Veola, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background / Dossier

A narcotic drug called bataco is cultivated on Veola (1832 Far Home). The drug boosts the metabolism and gives feelings of euphoria and power. However, long-term use causes serious health problems. Bataco is popular among troops fighting in the Hell Worlds.

World Starport

Veola has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Technology Level

Veola possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government

Veola is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
