Varsas is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Stanter Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System data

The system primary is Ceredon, an ordinary red main sequence star. (I) Sussus, a small gas giant, orbits in the habitable zone: (Ia) Varsas is its only major satellite and is designated the mainworld. (II, III) two rocky vacuum worlds, (IV) a large ringed gas giant, (V) a small gas giant, (VI) a large icy world, and (VII) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. All of the gas giants and the large icy world retain satellites.

(I) Sussus

(I) Sussus is a small gas giant that orbits Ceredon at a mean distance of 0.2 AU, within the habitable zone, and has an orbital period of 41 days 17 hours. It has a diameter of 48,000 km and is a mottled blue colour. It retains a single large satellite (Ia) Varsas, designated the system mainworld. Large dark spots – the so-called Eyes of Sussus – well up from the interior of the planet and remain visible around the equator for many months.

(Ia) Varsas

(Ia) Varsas is designated the mainworld. It orbits Sussus at a mean distance of 8 diameters (385,000 km), it has an orbital period of 26 days 9 hours and a rotation period of 41.25 hours. The axial tilt is 17 degrees. Varsas has a diameter of 4726 km, a density of 5.43 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.36 G. Its atmosphere is rated as Very Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.35 bar and a composition of 81% nitrogen, 18% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The world experiences high levels of radiation originating from both the star and the gas giant: protective measures must be taken at all times. Approximately 37% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges are in excess of 1m. Mean surface temperature: 14°C. The atmosphere is sluggish and local weather systems, driven by the star and the seas, work their way across the globe. The climate is seasonal and weather patterns follow regular cycles during the local year.

Mainworld geography and topography

The Sea of Misery and the Sea of Despair, two huge ovoid bodies of brackish water, each covering nearly a fifth of the surface of the world, lie to the north and to the south of the equator respectively, and are linked by a series of long narrow lakes. They are surrounded by the mineral-rich Gemcrust Highlands and the broken Plateau Lands, which eventually give way to stony wastes and barren polar deserts.

Native lifeforms

The world has no native life. Single-celled organisms have colonised the world and grow in such profusion around the shores of the seas that their respiration has begun to alter the composition of the atmosphere.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Varsas has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Varsas possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Varsas is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.
