== Disambiguation of Ludography Cites (2019) ==

Thomas, we have finally found a need for further disambiguation in the ludo cites if I am not mistaken.

* Please check out [[Gimmick]]

* The ''edition'' parameter may need to be added since the ''name'' and ''version'' parameters are duplicates across the multiple versions of ''Secrets of the Ancients.''

What is the policy for handling clear and distinct rules differences between editions? The affected content is on https://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Imperial_Currency the section labeled Imperial Banking, and the content differs sharply from what is given on page 91 of the MG2 Core Rules.

== Do we really need two sets of nearly identical TL charts? ==
+
::: If you go to [[Special:Watchlist]], it displays your current watchlist. How many pages are currently there? Mine shows "11,781 pages are on your Watchlist (plus talk pages)". When I went to [[Special:EditWatchlist]] I saw the blank page. I checked the server logs and saw the page generating an out of memory error. Apparently the EditWatchlist is trying to generate the whole list of 11,781 pages to remove them from the watchlist. I can increase the memory limit of the server, but don't want to leave it at an increased value to avoid causing other problems on the server. Trying to generate a full list of 11,781 pages is insane and stupid, and we should file reports to fix this problem. In any case, I know what the problem is, and if you want to edit your full watchlist, let me know and I'll up the memory on the server for a few days. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] ([[User talk:Tjoneslo|talk]]) 23:13, 26 April 2021 (EDT)

Right now now we two TL charts - one set with the Traveler TL and a nearly identical set with the Traveler and GURPS TLs.  Is this really necessary? What real purpose does it serve? --[[User:BruceGrubb|BruceGrubb]] ([[User talk:BruceGrubb|talk]]) 09:51, 22 February 2019 (EST)
+
:::: Mine says: "6,196 pages are on your Watchlist (plus talk pages). " Is there an upper limit of pages (e.g. 5000 ?) that it needs to be under? Many of the pages on my list were auto-added because of minor edits I have made that I probably do not want to track anyway. If you up the memeroy of the server, let me know and I will edit my watchlist; I just need to know what number of entries is the maximum. --[[User:WHULorigan|WHULorigan]] ([[User talk:WHULorigan|talk]]) 06:00, 27 April 2021 (EDT)

: We really don't need both. The problem is there are five TL charts: The Classic Traveller one (which ends to TL 15), the MT one (which ends at TL 20+), the GURPS 3rd one, the GURPS 4th one, and the Traveller 5th (which ends at TL 33). And there are internal differences for each one. So there are two charts: The in-universe one that belongs in the article, and the meta-game version that translates the five different Traveller rule set descriptions. I would agree at this point the whole thing is a mess however. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] ([[User talk:Tjoneslo|talk]]) 16:14, 22 February 2019 (EST)
+
::::: To be clear, the memory requirement is for the "EditWatchlist" page only. Pages on the watchlist is simply pointer records in the database and has little or no other effect on the wiki. I really don't have an idea of how many articles are the upper limit on using the EditWatchlist before the memory for that one page runs out. I have found if you go to [[Special:Preferences]], then under watchlist tab, select the "Edit raw watchlist" (or go to [[Special:EditWatchlist/raw]]), this presents the entire list as a edit box. You can remove (or add) article titles to the list and press save. [[User:Tjoneslo|Tjoneslo]] ([[User talk:Tjoneslo|talk]]) 06:47, 27 April 2021 (EDT)

::Is there a way to combine them as we originally had and eliminate the redundancy?  Oh if you are wondering I have a very [https://gurps.fandom.com/wiki/Traveller_5e_to_GURPS_TL_conversion quick and dirty conversion chart] over on the GURPS wiki. Yes everything doesn't line up with regards to the individual categories but you can give people too much information and IMHO Traveler 5e has that in spades.--[[User:BruceGrubb|BruceGrubb]] ([[User talk:BruceGrubb|talk]]) 18:17, 22 February 2019 (EST)

== Star Notation on the World Template (2019) ==
+
And you are on the Traveller RPG discord, yes?
Thomas, I think it's a good time to redesign the star notation on the world template.

* As we have seen when an infobox is designed with a header as is currently done, it makes it harder for our less trained volunteers to update it.

<pre>

{{MonostellarSystem

|name          = Prilissa Primary

|primary        = K4 V

|PrimaryNotes  = None

}}

</pre>

* [[Template:BinaryStarSystem]]

* I would like us to redesign this piece so we can use a normal infobox as others and separate out the header.

* It seems prudent. Volunteers are volunteers. I have made the same corrections you have in the past a number of times.

* The new versions can be named ''MonostellarSystem2'' for instance.

* Please let me know what you think.

I didn't pick all of that phrasing. Input from MWM and fans were the biggest factors. We deal with what we have, not perfection.

* Stop thinking like a bounded engineer or computer programmer, and start thinking like a top notch military officer or prosperous CEO.

* You can continue down the current path, but the frustration will never reduce.

:: Right now there are three different parameters regarding hull design
+
Hello Thomas, I'm back after an unintended hiatus. Now I'm wondering. I used to be, a long time ago, the HIWG coordinator/owner for Alpha Crucis Sector. What I'm wondering is, if I were to world build in the sector (or anywhere else for that matter) can I add things like world maps to the wiki? I'm not sure since that is a canon area whether that's allowed or not. I'm still interested in that area as it has low alien population (my personal bias) but intrigue with the Solomani Confederation along with some border 3I areas.
:: * Configuration - Primary Shape
+
Flyteach
:: * Streamlining - Secondary design shape

:: * CBPUSAL - Which seems to incorporate both of the above, but using the T5 design steps.

:: High Guard (p.20) which seems to be the primary design system simply uses Configuration, and notes some configuration are streamlined. The T5 Configuration (CBPUSAL), is similar to the High Guard one. So the idea would be to use the CBPUSAL in the <nowiki>{{{hullshape}}}</nowiki> (new template) or <nowiki>{{{hull}}}</nowiki> (old template). This is one of these subtle issues about trying to shift design parameter from one design system to another.

Hi there! Sorry for piling directly into your talk page with a help request / bug report, but the instructions at [[Forum:Help_desk]] say to add the title of the help request into a box that doesn't exist...
We're going to have to make decisions because there is overlap in hull categories and shape. It's fairly well mapped at [[Hull]].

* CBPUSAL is easy.

* The others we or you will have to make subjective selections on.

* Because we're talking about many versions of Traveller and often conflicting and semantically overlapping definitions.

* Whatever decisions you make, or punt to me to make decisions to make, I will be good with. I might argue it a bit, but I'll probably just eave it alone.

* So essentially, like the TDES selection boxes:

<pre>

{{Ship summary list|name= Battleship |tdes=BB}}

</pre>

* We'll just have to select each hull type to go to a category.

* If it's built like that, we'll simply choose:

<pre>

{{Hull summary list|name= Planetoid Hull |aerodynam= Unstreamlined Hull}}

{{Hull summary list|name= Buffered Planetoid Hull |hull= Buffered Planetoid Hull}}

</pre>

* Hull summary list can pull from whichever category we ask for... (|aerodynam= OR |hull=)

* Sound reasonable?

My real issue is that I'm seeing weirdness with the way the world summary template works. If you look at [[Alexin (world)]] and [[Islent (world)]] the format of the summary is not at all similar. Additionally, the summary for Alexin describes it as a 'a high-population world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.' despite its UWP indicating a population in the tens of thousands.

Hi Thomas, would you please assist in adding size-cat to the Ship summary tables?

* And please explain to me how to do it so I can learn from you.

* [[Template:InfoboxShip]]

:: Sorry, I thought I had explained that to you. After you make, and save, the changes to the table definition in the template, click on the "more" menu, and select the "Recreate Data" option. This will show the "Recreate Data" page. Click the Ok button to recreate the table, and generate the data.
+
== "Next" link for "world listings" not working ==
:: '''Important Note''': Please plan your updates to the cargo table definitions. Doing too many of them quickly or editing the pages which use the template while the generation is ongoing can introduce subtle and annoying errors, mostly duplicated entries.

:: ''Technical Details:'' Whenever you edit a template, it triggers a background task on the server to update all the articles which include the template. The background job runs every 10 minutes and processes between 100 and 200 articles per run. This is why the documentation page is separated onto the /doc page.

:: When you recreate the data for a cargo template, it does the same thing. The same background job reads through 100 to 200 articles per run and adds the data into the new table. For the InfoboxShip template with ~1,800 articles this takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to complete. If you edit any of the ship articles, the background process may create a duplicate page in the data set. If you recreate the data before the process is complete the second updates start after the first is completed.

:: I added the column "sizeCategory" for the "size-cat" parameter, to match the InfoboxShip2 table. It makes writing the queries for the Ship summary templates better.

Hi Thomas,

----
+
I noticed yesterday that on the Aslan page (but also on other pages too, it seems) the "next" link near the bottom of the page for "World listings" does not work when trying to step through the huge list of Aslan worlds. I've checked in both Firefox and Chrome, and while the page seems to refresh when the link is clicked, nothing actually changes and the newly presented page starts at the beginning of the world list again.
Ok. Thank you.

* Recreate data and be very patient.

* I just needed to wait.

* I experimented with this previously to no avail, but I just needed to wait awhile for the tables to rebuild.

* Thank you again.

Version differences[edit]

What is the policy for handling clear and distinct rules differences between editions? The affected content is on https://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Imperial_Currency the section labeled Imperial Banking, and the content differs sharply from what is given on page 91 of the MG2 Core Rules.

Edit Watchlist[edit]

The "Edit Your List of Watched pages" button on my Watchlist Page simply takes me to a blank web page (https://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Special:EditWatchlist). Is there any way to restore this functionality? --WHULorigan (talk) 11:55, 24 February 2021 (EST)

It does for me too. I'll take a look --Tjoneslo (talk) 15:30, 24 February 2021 (EST)
I guess there is no work-around for this? --WHULorigan (talk) 13:18, 26 April 2021 (EDT)
If you go to Special:Watchlist, it displays your current watchlist. How many pages are currently there? Mine shows "11,781 pages are on your Watchlist (plus talk pages)". When I went to Special:EditWatchlist I saw the blank page. Tjoneslo (talk) 23:13, 26 April 2021 (EDT)
Mine says: "6,196 pages are on your Watchlist (plus talk pages). --WHULorigan (talk) 06:00, 27 April 2021 (EDT)
To be clear, the memory requirement is for the "EditWatchlist" page only. Pages on the watchlist is simply pointer records in the database and has little or no other effect on the wiki. I really don't have an idea of how many articles are the upper limit on using the EditWatchlist before the memory for that one page runs out. I have found if you go to Special:Preferences, then under watchlist tab, select the "Edit raw watchlist" (or go to Special:EditWatchlist/raw), this presents the entire list as a edit box. You can remove (or add) article titles to the list and press save. Tjoneslo (talk) 06:47, 27 April 2021 (EDT)
That worked - I got it down to 2885 pages. Thanks. --WHULorigan (talk) 08:50, 27 April 2021 (EDT)

T5 Artwork / Copyright[edit]

Thomas, what is the policy on uploading pictures/art found in the T5.10 core rules? Is that acceptable on the wiki, or would it be a copyright violation? I was thinking about adding some of the pictures of medals and badges to their respective articles.

Pages Moves[edit]

Thanks, still fairly new to this, and will ensure next time move in done.

I do have a couple of page delete requests from previous inexperience at page naming.

Sturray(Pesek 0314)(world) Sturray(Pr 0314)(world)

are both errors on my part, and I've done all that is required to redirect the pages, I just find it's annoying when I search :-)

And you are on the Traveller RPG discord, yes?

Add a {{delete}} template to the articles that need to be deleted. It will allow others to find them and remove them. I am on Discord, come ping me some time. Tjoneslo (talk) 22:34, 9 March 2022 (EST)

Looking for admin with sysop privileges[edit]

Hello, i wasn't sure whom to ask, but i'm looking for any admin with sysop privileges who would be able to perform a Page Deletion. The article in question is Nishant Taliyan which was probably created in some kind of spamming activity. I wasn't sure who would be able to Delete Pages, so i thought i'd ask you because you seem to perform so many useful tasks involving cleanup mechanisms behind the wiki. Thank you kindly for your time.

KevinHutchins (talk) 11:58, 7 September 2022 (EDT)

Thank you for your kind welcome[edit]

I have never really contributed to or edited wikis in the past, so I was very thoughtful with the change that I made, and was sure to document it. I did search my collection of reference material for Traveller and did not find specific mentions of the vargr having any human politics :P

Has a template broken?[edit]

All of a sudden, every page I look at that uses the StellarDataQuery template and has a value in the Sophonts field of its /data page is expanding it 'five' times, twice in Spanish (example: Regina (world). I can't for the life of me figure out why, and it doesn't look like anyone's edited a relevant template lately. Any ideas what's up? Patrick Morris Miller (talk) 15:28, 16 December 2022 (EST)

The problem is the underlying cargo tables have duplicated entries. I'll need to clean them up to fix the problem. Probably later today. Tjoneslo (talk) 00:28, 17 December 2022 (EST)

Worldbuilding in Alpha Crucis[edit]

Hello Thomas, I'm back after an unintended hiatus. Now I'm wondering. I used to be, a long time ago, the HIWG coordinator/owner for Alpha Crucis Sector. What I'm wondering is, if I were to world build in the sector (or anywhere else for that matter) can I add things like world maps to the wiki? I'm not sure since that is a canon area whether that's allowed or not. I'm still interested in that area as it has low alien population (my personal bias) but intrigue with the Solomani Confederation along with some border 3I areas. Flyteach

Issue with World template (also can't add topics to help forum?)[edit]

Hi there! Sorry for piling directly into your talk page with a help request / bug report, but the instructions at Forum:Help_desk say to add the title of the help request into a box that doesn't exist...

My real issue is that I'm seeing weirdness with the way the world summary template works. If you look at Alexin (world) and Islent (world) the format of the summary is not at all similar. Additionally, the summary for Alexin describes it as a 'a high-population world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.' despite its UWP indicating a population in the tens of thousands.

If these are things a simple contributor can fix, I'm happy to help if you can point me in the right direction. Cheers!
