Umion is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Loran Subsector of Halcyon Sector.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.
- This world lies on the Runners Bane Star Lane.
- This world lies on the Jubb-Duseb Corridor.

System Data
Kellan-Umion System
The primary is Kellan, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0136 Sols, a mass of 0.3626 Sols, and a diameter of 551,000 km. (I) Pasadra, a small gas giant: (Ib) Umion is its outer satellite and is designated the mainworld, (II) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (III) a vacuum worldlet, (IV) a vacuum iceworld, (V) a large gas giant, (VI) a small gas giant, and (VII) an exotic atmosphere bigworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds have satellites.
(I) Wardin
(I) Wardin is a small gas giant that orbits Kellan at a mean distance of 0.19 AU (28.4 million km) and has an orbital period of 50 days 6 hours. It has a diameter of 37,000 km and is a lightly banded pale green colour. It retains a family of three major satellites of which the second, (Ib) Umion, is designated the mainworld. A large dark green storm dominates the northern polar regions.
Mainworld data
(Ib) Umion
(Ib) Umion is the second of the three major moons and is designated the mainworld. It orbits Wardin at a mean distance of 13 Diameters (481,000 km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 48 days 13 hours: the world is tidally locked to Wardin. The axial tilt is 8 degrees. Umion has a diameter 7,671 km, a density of 4.89 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.53 G. The world is flexed by tidal forces and is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.82 bar and a composition of 96% nitrogen, 12% oxygen, 1% carbon dioxide and 1% argon, water vapour, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The atmospheric taint is caused by the high percentage of atmospheric gases. Approximately 14% of the surface is covered in lakes of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.1m. Mean surface temperature: -45°C. The atmosphere is active and moderate weather systems driven by the star cross the surface. The climate has minor seasonal variations.
Mainworld geography and topography
Total surface area: 185 million km², Land surface area: 159 million km², Water surface area: 26 million km².

World starport
Umion has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Umion possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World government
Umion is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
