Basic Ship Synopsis
A Free Trader. 200 tons. Jump-1. 1-G. 30 tons fuel. Model/1. 10 staterooms. 20 low. 2 hardpoints. 82 tons cargo. Streamlined. 4 crew. MCr37.08: 11 months. [3]
Description (Specifications)
It has jump drive-A, maneuver drive-A, and power plant-A, giving performance of jump-1 and 1-G acceleration. There is fuel tankage for 30 tons, sufficient for the power plant and one jump-1. Adjacent to the bridge is a computer Model/1. There are ten staterooms and twenty low berths. [4]
No turrets or weaponry are installed, but there are two hardpoints and two tons are set aside for fire control. There are no ship's vehicles. Cargo capacity is 82 tons. The hull is streamlined. The free trader requires a crew of four: pilot, engineer, medic, and steward. Gunners may be carried if the ship is armed. The ship costs MCr37.08 and typically takes eleven months to build. [5]
Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary. [6]

History & Background (Dossier)
The Type A becomes the cornerstone of interstellar commerce by the end of the TL:7-9 epoch. It can operate under impromptu circumstances as a tramp liner and typically transports interstellar mail along all but the most frequented trade routes. A great number of variant classes of the Type A have been manufactured over the millennia.
Selected Type A Variant Ships
- Type A class Free Trader
- Type A1 class Far Trader
- Type A2 class Far Trader
- Type A3 class Fast Trader AKA Type A3 class Far Trader
- Type AA class Armored Merchant
