The Twaro of Twaroy (Gur 0201) are a Minor Race with a non-humanoid appearance and technologically developing sophonts.

Description (Specifications)

The Twaro, like many of the native lifeforms of Twaroy, exhibit a seven-lobed radial symmetry originally suited to aquatic existence. The Twaro remain marginally amphibious, but are adapting to life on land in an evolutionary process that the modern era has captured mid-stream.

Averaging around 50kg, the bullet-shaped body of the Twaro has two sets of limbs. Both function with equal faculty as arms or legs, and some families retain a bit of webbing between fingers and toes that allows them to swim with remarkable speed. Each limb has four fingertoes arranged in a ring, each mutually opposable, flexible enough to allow easy manipulation of objects or their rapidly increasing technological base, and tipped with a fixed nail that is more like a claw. The body forward of the upper limbs hosts a ring of sensory organs including stalked eyes and nostril-tongues. The forward point of the body is the mouth, which can close its seven lobes for protection or increased speed while swimming, or open to feed on just about anything available. While limited to the food of their homeworld, the Twaro are omnivores within that restriction.

The brain of the Twaro is essentially the same organ as their digestive and circulatory tract, running the entire length of their body.

The Twaro travel horizontally, using which ever limbs happen to be "down" at the moment unless they are carrying something that cannot be readily "handed around". Their rear/lower legs are not oriented to allow upright mobility, though they can sit upright, and do so when a task requires it.

The Twaro evolved from smaller sea life in dangerous waters, and retain some of their ancestral tools. The Twaro can lose limbs with little loss of overall function. While still quite traumatic for the individual at the time of loss, losing a limb is not a lifetime loss, as the Twaro slowly regrow lost limbs with even a modicum of medical assistance or self care. While some of their smaller and more primitive ancestors can manage it, the Twaro are not capable of surviving a severing blow to their body.

Twaro are smooth-skinned and vary widely in color.

History & Background (Dossier)

Some time in the last 100,000 years, the Twaro (Twaroy/Gur 0201) rose to sentience on a world with a starkly divided night sky. While half of their sky was brightly starry, even featuring the broad band of glowing dust and star shine Humaniti would recognize as the Milky Way, the other half, muted by dark dust and distance, was a yawning void with only a few bright stars. This starkly divided and evocative night sky both inspired and frightened the Twaro, who would not seek space, or even the wonders of flight, for many millennia.

Explorers, settlers, merchants, and desperate exiles from the still forming Julian Protectorate and from ambitious Vargr explorers and exploiters would brush the coreward edge of the rift through Gur Sector, discovering the Twaro and inadvertantly traumatizing them, and eventually settling sparsely across the region, including an outpost or two in the handful of stars around Twaroy in Gur Sector.

Outsider outposts have come and gone in coreward Gur Sector, though adjacent Gn'hk'r Sector to spinward has been more extensively settled, and a far-flung group of K'kree have taken up residence to coreward in Grikr!ng Sector.

The Twaro have, in the last century, begun the climb into an industrial age and are finally exploring the larger universe around them in halting steps.

Curiosity has usually meant that there was always someone keeping an eye on the Twaro. The Twaro are a topic of some discussion amongst their neighbors, but so far there have been no attempts to help and/or exploit the Twaro by dragging them into space too soon. They currently enjoy, unknowingly, the protection of nearby Claylannus (Gur 0401), aided by the odd biology of Twaroy. Claylannus conducted several stealthy expeditions to Twaroy in the late 900s in an attempt to catalog and analyze the local life. While some economic potential exists in every new alien biological regime discovered, the reports issued by Claylannus showed a sufficiently unusual bological model that the nearby Vargr, K'kree, and Humaniti worlds have felt no great urge to exploit the planet. It is an open secret in the region that the other powers have all conducted quiet expeditions to Twaroy to confirm the findings of Claylannus.
