Local Lifeform: Nushilii

The hundred or so inhabitants are all IISS members; part of a small survey team investigating the Nushilii, aquatic reducers which feed off the various microscopic lifeforms that exist in the seas.

The world ocean itself contains huge quantities of soluble rare-earth compounds, and as part of the food-chain, the compounds build up in the bodies of the native life. Near the top of the food-chain are the Nushilii, accumulating large percentages of rare-earths as part of their biomass. The survey team are preparing the way for possible harvesting of the Nushilii for their rare-earth compounds from their body tissues.
