Thran is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.

  • As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Orowan Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data

Guluda-Thran System

The primary is Guluda, an ordinary yellow-white main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.668 Sols, a mass of 1.092 Sols, and a diameter of 1.536 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (III) a dense atmosphere bigworld. (IV) Thran orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (VI) a dense stony planetoid belt, (VII) a large gas giant, (VIII) a ringed large gas giant, (IX) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, (X) a small gas giant, (XI) a small ice giant, and (XII) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(IV) Thran

(IV) Thran is designated the mainworld. It orbits primary at a mean distance of 1.06 AU (158.6 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 1 year 17 days and a rotation period of 31.5 hours. The axial tilt is 18 degrees. Thran has a diameter of 10,207 km, a density of 5.31 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.77 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.87 bar and a composition of 78% nitrogen (N2), 19% oxygen (O2), 2% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the high percentage of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Approximately 41% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.15m. Mean surface temperature: 19°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Satellites

Thran retains two natural satellites, a very thin atmosphere worldlet named Belal and a corrosive atmosphere inferno world named Dax:

(IVa) Belal (UWP Y221000-0, orbiting at 13 Diameters/133,000 km)
(IVb) Dax (UWP Y4B0000-0, orbiting at 40 Diameters/408,000 km)

Mainworld geography and topography

Total surface area: 327 million km², Land surface area: 193 million km², Water surface area: 134 million km².

Native Lifeforms

The hot bigworld lying in orbital position (III) (within the H– region of the inner system) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic extremophile cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and moisture. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

Thran, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

The cold marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (V) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive native life, consisting almost entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in most ecological niches. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Thran has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Thran possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World government

Thran is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
