System Data

Mettin-Tarkan System

The system primary is Mettin, an ordinary red main sequence star that retains a miniscule dwarf companion called Faldan, which orbits at a mean distance of 10 AU. Mettin has a family of one inner small gas giant, two small rocky worlds, two outer small gas giants, and a narrow planetoid belt: Tarkan orbits the inner gas giant at a mean distance of 850,000 km.

Faldan retains a single rocky world and a small gas giant.

An extensive planetoid belt primarily consisting of rocky bodies circles both stars at a mean distance of 18 AU.

All of the gas giant worlds within the system retain satellites.

(I) Garavan

Garavan is a small blue gas giant that orbits in the habitable zone of the systems primary star. It has a diameter of 22,000 km and retains a family of four small rocky worlds. Tarkan, the mainworld, is its third satellite, orbitting at a mean distance of 990,000 km.

Mainworld: (Ic) Tarkan

Tarkan has a diameter of 3400 km, a slightly below average density and a surface gravity of 0.21 G. It retains no atmosphere. Around 10% of the surface is covered in deposits of water-ice: such deposits are primarily found in the bases of deep craters.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Tarkan is heavily cratered.

Native Lifeforms

Tarkan has no native lifeforms.

History & Background / Dossier

The Tarkan system is a relative backwater elevated to a position of importance by its position on both the Outland Run and Void Edge Star Lanes.

World Starport

Tarkan has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

The government of Tarkan is actively engaged in upgrading the port facilities, with the aim of creating a grade A port facility by 5625AD.

World Technology Level

Tarkan possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

Tarkan has a network of maglev tracks leading to newly constructed (and currently empty) communities.

World Government

Tarkan is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be monarchy, with titles passed to family members. Or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Or the organization may be more typical organization with positions of power inherited.

  • Tarkan is ruled by the "Five Eternals", powerful families controlling different areas of the worlds economy. Chief among these are the producers of oxygen and food, those who control trade and commerce, and those responsible for infrastructure. Each Eternal is effectively a commercial organisation.

World Military

Tarkan has no intrinsic military forces. Security and policing duties are carried out by private organisations paid for by the Eternals.

World Economy

Tarkan makes considerable profits from trade passing along the various Star Lanes that pass through the system. Much of the profit is invested in improvements to the port facilities and the infrastructure of the city of Cannart.

Trade Data

No information yet available.

World Demographics

Approximately 2 million (97.0% of the population) humans of Terran descent.

World Culture

Tarkan has a competetive culture. It measures itself in particular against Ras Tennol and seeks to outdo that world in all things.

Urbanization

Almost the entire population live in Cannart, a subsurface city located on a broad vacuum plain close to the equator. Cannart is served by the downport and is the hub of a maglev transport network. The maglev lines run to fully constructed but currently uninhabited minor cities, built as part of the Eternals' effort to upgrade the world, its importance and its infrastructure.
