The Tao'l Spider is a gigantic, carnivorous, invertebrate anthropod, native to Silk (Dagudashaag 2440).
Physiology and ecology
This creature, which has been bred to increase its size, has a head that closely resembles a Terran spider with a long millipede like body. In the wild they grow to a maximum length of one meter. Domestic varieties are up to three meters long. The body consists of twenty segments each or which has two major legs containing posionous claws, and up to forty minor legs, each of which has a spinnerette.
The males are extremely fierce and also have large jaws that are efficient at removing limbs.
Life Cycle and reproduction
The Spiders lie on their back, use the spinnerettes on their minor legs to weave a brightly patterened sheet of strong cloth. In the wild this is used to keep the Spider's eggs safe above ground in a type of hammock resembling a brightly colored parasitic tree worm.
Even while weaving, a Tao'l spider can defend itself - each of its forty major legs can rotate through a full 180°, so it can both run away or defend itself with poison claws. In addition each spider can spray a foul fluid from glands in it's last segment.
Diet and trophics
They are obligate carnivores and are known to consume a variety of small creatures, especially flyers.
History and background
Tao'l Spider silk is a valuable commodity.
Travellers' Aid Society Advisory
They rarely attack creatures larger than themselves, but should be considered a significant threat and caution should be taken in environments where they are known to dwell.
