System Overview

A system located in the Sinta subsector.

Mok-Retinae is a small, verdant world, whose low gravity and rich soils produce in some of the tallest trees in known space. It was first colonised early in the Rule of Man by a Solomani religious order defined by its belief in the divinity of individual worlds. The order occupies the planet to this day and rigorously enforces landing restrictions by offworlders. Mainworld Climate & Physical Features

The climate ranges from temperate at the equator to arctic at the poles, with minor seasonal variation over the planet's 52-day year. Days are 22.95 hours long.

The primary physical feature of note is Mukhraa, a roughly square-pyramidial mountain whose summit is an unnaturally flat plateau roughly two kilometres to a side. The top of the mountain is home to the entire Hin caste, and is the location of Macra Imperial Downport, the only location on the planet open to spacecraft for landing.

Mok-Retinae has three moons, giving a complex tidal system.

Ecology

Mok-Retinae boasts a verdant ecosystem, with climates ranging from heavy jungle at the equator to forests and grassland in the tropics, making way for evergreen forest and tundra towards the poles. The low gravity favours tall trees and large body mass in animals.

The world is best known for its primary export - wood. The planet's exceptionally tall trees allow the production of very long single timber beams, which are in demand offworld for luxury construction.

Macrofauna ranges from small birds and lizards up to very large mammals and reptiles, some of which are dangerous to humans. No dangerous macrofauna is native to Macra.

Government

Mok-Retinae has a two-tier governmental system. Local government of Anwar communities is democratic, with a council (usually of older residents) electing a hetman from amongst their number, who then sets policy and dispenses justice for minor infractions.

The Hin caste is organised as a hierarchical religious order, governed by a Prelate who serves for life. The Hin also provide a connective function between the Anwar communities, sharing information, mediating community interactions, handling exports and presiding over more serious matters of justice.

Since local government has no jurisdiction beyond the limits of its own community, any Anwar who wishes to opt out of his government may do so, so long as he is willing to bear the hardship and inconvenience of founding his own. This has led to the nucleation of many small communities, spread out over a wide area.

Society & Customs

Central to Mok-Retinan society is the belief that the planet Mok Retinae is sacred, and should not be contaminated by the the touch of material from other worlds. Immigration is therefore prohibited, and offworlders are barred from landing except at the Imperial starport at Macra.

The population is split between two castes; the Hin and the Anwar. The Anwar represent 98.5% of the population, and dwell in a large number of small communities covering a radius of several hundred miles around Mukhraa. The remaining 1.5% are the Hin, who may be viewed as a sort of religious caste. The Hin are viewed as spiritually unclean, due to their contact with offworld materials, and may not touch the surface of the planet except at Mukhraa. The Hin handle all dealings with offworlders, including trade and export.

The Anwar use only locally-sourced materials, although they have access to scientific understanding up to TL-13. Common materials are timber, clay, steel, copper, lead and brass. There is some variation among the population as to what degree of interaction with the Hin is acceptable, but for the most part, available technology is mechanical with some simple electrical applications. The Hin use mostly imported equipment, up to TL-13.

Population Centres of note

Macra (locally Mukhraa) - pop 800 - home of the Hin caste and location of the Imperial Starport, atop the mountain also known as Mukhraa. Sadoon - pop 8,000 - Anwar centre of industry and technological development. Located equatorially, under a geostationary solar power plant.

Shair - pop 1,200 - Anwar town, centre of the radical movement. Small, but posessed of higher technology than the more conservative areas.

Military Ground Forces

One PAD missile battery covering the starport. Ninety-three (Hin) men under arms.
