Other Discussion (2007)

The comment "This sector was know as Amshagi during the First Imperium." appears both here and in the entry for Provence Sector. Presumably one of these is wrong.

Nope. According to Alien - Vilani & Vargr both sectors bear the same name. If you look at a star map, a big chunk of both Corridor and Provence sectors are empty rift. The name "Amshagi" may apply only to the half a sector space between the Great Rift (in Corridor) and the Windhorn Rift (In Provence).

Perhaps the Vilani were less strict on the sector grid alignment then the terrans who came after... As I have mentioned elsewhere, I don't know how the Imperium got their sector grid imposed on the Zhodani, Aslan, Vargr and K'kree so that while they name the sectors something else, they don't change the grid alignment.

I know if you look at the Zhodani providences, they also don't align with the Imperial sectors. I suspect that a "sector" is a Third Imperium invention, expanded over all of Charted Space, and named by the ambassadors to the Imperium. The other races use different space mapping systems.

I would hazard to say something very similar. I can see no reason why the Zhodani, nor the Aslan, Hivers etc. would use a system for mapping space that is anywhere similar to what is used by the Imperium. Just think of the variance here on on Earth as far as measurement sytems went in the medival time period. Only the spread of information (and the occassional conquering and subjugation of other countries) and commerce caused us all to adapt to the measurement systems we currently use.

For example... just what is a foot? or was that a meter?

...and what about temperature?

For other races (even Vilani) the basic "hex" abstraction used in the game of 1 hex=1 parsec would not apply (see Parsec/meta). Of course we can't really be complaining about mapping when we only have two dimensions represented. Even as an 2D representation of 3D, there should be 50 stars within 5 pc (hexes) of terra (see wikipedia:List_of_nearest_stars) 5 hex radius only has 61 hexes (though I have read some handwavium about only stars with planets being mapped - but I cannot believe that any star will not have some amount of junk orbiting it). So at some point we need to throw reality out the window...
