The Sulliji are a technologically sophisticated sophont species.

Description (Specifications)

The Sulliji are a genetically re-engineered race inhabiting the outer reaches of Catacomb (Deneb 2234). The Sulliji are built from the ground up around polyphosphazes. These are chains of alternating singly and doubly bound phosphorus and nitrogen atoms. This arrangement never occurs naturally but shares many of the properties of organic molecules. Polyphosphaze substances' major advantage is that they resist freezing even at very low temperatures, and in fact come to most resemble carbon chains well below the freezing point of water. For creatures living in the farthest reaches of a solar system, they're a perfect fit.

They are extremely spindly, resembling large, pentapodal spiders. Three of their multi-jointed legs are used for walking only, while the two at the front of the body switch between being legs and arms-with-hands as necessary. When used as hands, the other three legs spread out into a tripod which keeps them stable, as well as grabbing onto the surface to prevent inertia from throwing the body around while manipulating objects. A foot-wide section on the front of the body displays a five-fold crystalline eye, adapted in size and sensitivity to the low light levels of their frozen homes. Around the eye are three pinhead-sized bioluminescent organs, which are used for Sulliji speech. The hydrogen air on a Sulliji world is too thin for sound to carry effectively, so the tiny flashing lights put on displays that carry meaning to other members of the species.

There is no inherent natural limit to a Sulliji lifespan, and no natural diseases affect them; only accidents will kill. This means that the Sulliji don't have a lifespan per se, but rather possess a half-life like a radioactive isotope. The mean time to a fatal accident is about 1,800 years, which means that more than half of all living Sulliji are older than the Imperium.

History & Background (Dossier)

The ancient Sulliji were a typical carbon-based life forms living on a typical terrestrial world. About 100,000 years ago the second star evolved from a main sequence star to a small red giant, then the main star had stripped and absorbed its outer layers. Though short-lived, the giant had thoroughly baked the planetary system, then the inner planets were bombarded with hard ultraviolet radiation and x-rays from the newly exposed white dwarf. The Sulliji were the product of an immense effort to save civilization when the system's second star scorched the inner planets.

The modern Sulliji are artificial life forms, chemically unlikely from the standpoint of natural evolution, but well-suited to the alien environment of the system's giant, outer comets.

Until contact with the Imperium, the modern Sulliji had been stagnant. In the 11,000 years since they had emerged from the red-giant-induced dark age, they had progressed only slowly to TL–9 where they had remained for nearly two millennia.
