The prehistoric Shrashashee learned to coat their natural lure-like protrusion with the fluid hydrocarbons that dominate the upper reaches of their seas. They then sent an exothermic pulse through the lure, igniting the hydrocarbons as they swam. The result -- a streamer of bright, shimmering light -- appeared to smaller creatures as the bioluminescent marking of another, smaller species. The Shrashashee now use similar (but much more powerful) submerged exothermic reactions to conduct any welding or other high-temperature operations, although their tool-use and construction is mostly centered on biotechnological products. These are formed from domesticated sea creatures similar to spiders and barnacles.
