Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard Shipyard v1.13 written by Andrea Vallance.

The Shantou class Gunboat is a light warship.

Description (Specifications)

Designed and built at Urcor for the Worlds of The Leader. These ships operate within the Far Home Sector. The TL–11 hulls have jump 2 drives and carry enough internal fuel for two range 2 jumps, and carry drop tanks with 28 days of power plant fuel and an additional jump 2 as needed. This the current prototype for a new class to succeed the Sariwon Class Corvettes. This ships is currently undergoing trials on an extended shake down cruise with the Glorious Leader's Benevolent Patrol Flotilla. The ship shares several design features with the slightly smaller corvette and is fitted with a model 5 fib computer adjacent to the bridge. The largest native build vessel in the fleet. Armament is a pair dual plasma gun turrets, firing as four batteries, and a pair of triple beam laser turrets firing as a single battery. They have a fully streamlined saucer structure hull equipped with fuel scoops and on board fuel purification for wilderness ocean refueling. The gunboat is built as an enlarged and improved version of its predecessor. They retain the tiny boarding part for customs inspections and bribery collecting shake downs. The unused missile magazine now makes a great stowage for smuggling. They are fast but the ten high energy weapons rob its agility.

Upon entering service the prototype was called upon to contact some exploration and system surveys regardless of their sensor limitations. Originally, the majority of the system surveys had been conducted by civilian vessels which had additional scientific equipment, naval and governmental crews on board. However, since the new economic reforms, and the depletion of the civilian resources, the civilian vessels must venture much further out on extended voyages, thus were no longer available for survey operations. Duties which had previously been assigned under the planned economy era prior to the economic reform. Consequently, the Navy must come up with their own solutions to meet these new demands, and the conversion of the gunboat was one of the answers: it is new and reliable enough to perform the duties of low speed orbital surveying tasks within the confines of the leader's territorial interests.

Contrary to the commonly held, but erroneous belief that the Navy is following the tradition of maintaining weaponry on many of its auxiliaries (though there is certainly some degree of this), the retention was primarily for economic reasons: to avoid fully conversion costs, the original armament(s) were retained unless they were no longer serviceable. Consequently, many of vessels maintain some of their former fighting capabilities.

History & Background (Dossier)

One in service.

Distant Fringe Vessels

The Distant Fringe is said to be a far spinward-rimward area inhabited by colonists and refugees originating on Terra. The region is extremely isolated, separated from the rest of Charted Space by vast, almost uncrossable rifts that were once broached by a system of calibration Points and the use of tankers. Those few academics within Charted Space who have found references to the Distant Fringe regard it as little more than a tall tale. Likewise, many of the inhabitants of the Distant Fringe believe the existence of Charted Space to be mythical.[3]

Vessels originating within the Distant Fringe are very rarely encountered outside of the region. However, misjumps do occur and anomalies with bizarre spacetime and Jumpspace effects exist: as such, craft of this type are not entirely unknown within Charted Space.[4]
