Shanim is a ring of many small planetoids not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. Government control of this world is by an external military force. This is a high technology world with available technology over the standards for Charted Space. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Bolivar Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Shanim, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. This world has a nearby Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships. During the Long Night this world was named Irkhadii.

Shanim is a member of the Vilani Run. The naval base hosts elements of the 83rd Fleet.

History and background

Once an important mineral exporter in the early years of the Imperium, operations (supported by DagMet AG) in the Shanim Belt declined in the early 500s when the major deposits were worked out. Small amounts of valuable minerals and ores are produced, although Shanim has lost its industrial pre-eminence.

Point of Interest: Shanim Naval Base & Support Facility

The re-establishment of Shanim's importance came with the decision of the Imperial Navy to build an additional naval support facility in the wake of the Ilelish Revolt. Housed in a sizable, half-hollowed asteroid called Yousf's Heart, the naval base still provides the navy with a large maintenance facility. It specialized in hull and intermediate system repairs, overhauls, and constructions. In an attempt to reduce its costs the IN has recently sold the repair side to the private sector with a secured five year contract. Lemur-Bolivar Stellar Constructs hopes to expand the site to increase its commercial business.
