Selasia is a preindustrial, moderate population water world with over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts in population size.

  • Its surface is 90% or more covered in an ocean of water.
  • The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
  • As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a member of the Bright Conclave in the Alasim Subsector of Halcyon Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.
  • This world-system hosts a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.

System Data

Monsado-Selasia System

The primary is Monsado, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.886 Sols, a mass of 0.98 Sols, and a diameter of 1.391 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum inner world, and (II) a vacuum worldlet. (III) Selasia orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a large gas giant, (V) a ringed large gas giant, (VI) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (VII) a small gas giant, (VIII) a small ice giant, (IX) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (X) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, and (XI) a vacuum worldlet form the outer system. Most of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(III) Selasia

(III) Selasia is designated the mainworld. It orbits Monsado at a mean distance of 0.78 AU (116.7 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 254 days 4 hours and a rotation period of 31 hours. The axial tilt is 11 degrees. Selasia has a diameter of 13,120 km, a density of 5.72 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 1.06 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 1.14 bar and a composition of 72% nitrogen (N2), 27% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by an extremely unpleasant odor of organic origin. Selasia is a water world: approximately 97% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.75m. Mean surface temperature: 3°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Cool and experiences very minor seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is dynamic and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas sweep across the globe.

Satellites

Selasia retains a single natural satellite, a very thin atmosphere hospitable world named Taffar:

(IIIa) Taffar (UWP F633668-B, orbiting at 8 Diameters/102,000 km)

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 541 million km², Water surface area: 525 million km², Land surface area: 16 million km². Selasia is almost entirely covered in a world-ocean of liquid water. The land area is made up of scattered islands and isolated archipelagos, largely of volcanic origin. Only a relatively small part of that available land surface is desirable: some islands are environmentally hostile, some have difficult terrain such as mountains, some are geologically active, and many areas of "land" are subject to Selasia's extreme tides and regularly flood. In total, the usable surface area of the world is considered to be somewhere around 7 million km². Both poles have small icecaps.

Native Lifeforms

Monsado-Selasia System

Selasia, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

  • Taffar, Selasia's temperate hospitable moon has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Selasia has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Peace footing (government modifier x1.1). Port Capacity: 880,000 dTons

World technology level

Selasia possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Selasia is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
