Riensh is a poor, nonindustrial desert hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • This world has no free-standing water.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
  • It is a member of the Zhodani Consulate in the Asepvedl Subsector of Ziafrplians Sector and in the Province of Iadr Nsobl.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

System Data

There are eight worlds in the star system, including the single gas giant.

Mainworld Data

The surface gravity is 0.28 Gs, and the atmospheric pressure is 0.7 atmospheres. There is a metallic core, which produces a density of 6.13 g/ml. The climate is frigid. This world is tidally locked with its primary at a distance of 0.76 AU.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Tortured by the gravity of its star and the nearby gas giant, this world has jagged mountain ranges and deep fissure valleys across its cracked, frosty surface. Strange hydrocarbon snows are the only ices present. Very rare comet strikes are the only source of water in the system.

Native Lifeforms

Native life is present, which served as quite a shock to early Zhodani explorers.

History & Background (Dossier)

Established as a low yield mining base with a small scientific team assigned to solve the riddle of life forms here. Intendant scientists, with noble supervision are still investigating.

World Starport

Riensh has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

  • A poor quality, bare bones facility without the benefit of repair facilities owing to the low population, which provides a small labor pool and the low technology level. The hand full of working utility boats are essentially irreplaceable and very important.

World Technology Level

Riensh possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
  • The technology is crude, at TL–7 it is simple, straightforward and designed for rugged abuse in a deadly environment with little though of maintenance or repair. Equipment is over engineered, bulky, smelly and noisy, it is none the less built to last. There is no design aesthetic aside from being heavy, sturdy and practically indestructible. Delicate, advanced off world designs are scoffed at, as fragile toys, ill suited to real work.

World Government

Riensh is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

  • A single unified command structure ensures that each vital function that directly relates to survival is addressed. Mineral production is given priority as it ensures the planet's limited income to obtain materials needed to survive. The underground tunnel complexes are designed to be as self-sufficient as possible, but some inflow of resources is preferable to complete isolation.

World Military

There is a small internal security and policing force.

World Economy

Extremely limited, trade is desired, but the volume is low.

Trade Data

Water, and water reclamation equipment are extremely valuable here. Ice deposits are nearly non-existent. ALL water must be endlessly recycled and reused. Fresh water is largely an alien concept to most natives.

World Demographics

10,000 Zhodani.

Survival concerns trump all other goals; personal liberty is a luxury, in so far as your liberty had better not involve anything that might jeopardize the safety of others. Society is wildly intolerant of unnecessary risks. 'Better safe than sorry' is a widely held belief; staying alive is its own reward here. There is a management structure for each major department for the nobles. The proles and workers are numerous and dependent on being told what to do.

World Culture

An unforgiving backwater off the beaten path, this world has stoic, utilitarian people who know little of more glamorous off world things. There are a few rare earth metals which are critical to high technology super conductive technologies. These are the primary reason the whole settlement has not been abandoned. The miners and their descendants are a stubborn and determined group, who don't want to leave. These Zhodani live in their world and not really on it. Their tunnels are a maze for any aside from the natives. The surface is basically lethal, and avoided if at all possible. Outposts and underground mines are reached by sealed electric trains with life support in kilometers of rail tunnels. Nuclear power plants are in use here, deep below the occupied levels.

Historical Data

Since its settlement long ago, this world has always been of little importance to the Zhodani Consulate. Governmental investment in the colony is now widely considered a mistake, as the costs of survival here are not well offset by the values of the mineral deposits.
