The history of the Union is not well known.  Its earliest records indicate a loose association of systems already in place, not all of which kept good records themselves.  The most widely held theory (though not embraced by the leadership of the Union) is that the origins of the Union lie in the gradual settling and legitimizing of the many pirate bands which arose from the Corporate Wars period in Gateway.  By the mid 400s most of these bands had been driven to create states in unoccupied systems, or take over existing settlements, and either become legitimate or use these bases for further piracy. Regardless of original intent, most of these pirate bases had become de facto states by the 600s, either by natural progression or via the bloody overthrow of unrepentant pirate lords.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Renkard Union is an interstellar, multi-system government located in the Gateway Sector prior to being occupied by the K'kree known as the Lords of Thunder in 1106.

  • Once a trader's union in Gateway sector embracing some twenty worlds within the Riftin and Farina subsectors and across the Gateway Sector border into the neighboring sector of Luretiir!girr, the Renkard Union was absorbed in 1106 and 1107 by the much larger and more powerful Xuruk'xaar'keer!, also known as the "Lords of Thunder".

Goals[edit]

Primarily organized for trade and self-defense, the Union has been relatively peaceful for most of its documented existence, though it maintained a sizeable space fleet for use against the predations of pirates. The fleet is sufficient for escort duty and protection against pirate raids, but would eventually prove to be inadequate against more powerful opponents.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Renkard Union remained a loose association of roughly 22 systems, with a halo of remote resource worlds in neighboring Luretiir!girr Sector and firm mercantile bonds with the nearby Megusard Corporate until the early 900s, when a breakaway political movement exiled by the Two Thousand Worlds began absorbing worlds in Luretiir!girr Sector in a slow path across that sector toward the worlds of the Union. By the mid 900s the now alarmed Renkard Union began to close ranks, invested in a better Navy, and continued to monitor the approach of the K'kree.

By 990 the K'kree offshoot, calling themselves the Lords of Thunder, were carving into the resource worlds and remote colonies affiliated with the Union, and planting advanced bases to flank and hary the Union. This state of affairs was largely stable through the 1000s, though the K'kree crept ever closer. By 1102 the last of the Union colonies was occupied by the K'kree. In 1105 and 1106 the Thunder began probing the core worlds of the Union. The Union's Grand Admiral decided to send a stern message to the K'kree, and engaged the K'kree provocation fleet at Xabthar.

Battle of Xabthar[edit]

In 1106, a crucial battle at Xabthar was lost by Renkard Grand Admiral Hugo Vandamien, and K'kree ground forces were able to land and seize the Union's capital at Silest. Since that time, the worlds of the Union have been completely dominated by the Xaar'keer! forces of the K'kree warlord called Kaxk, also known as the Lords of Thunder.

It should be noted in passing that Kaxk's clan Ktiir!t'krik is not formally acknowledged as part of the K'kree T't'tkahk Xeng Kirr, "the Two Thousand Worlds", an empire which occupies all or part of some fourteen full sectors beyond Luretir!girr, the sector lying between K'kree Space and Gateway Sector.

Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]

The Renkard Union government is characterized as having an average degree of centralization, which has difficulty setting uniform policies that direct the entire multi-system state, but gives a high degree of freedom to local/planetary governments. The Renkard Union government is usually classified as a Union, a form of a Federation.

K'kree Domination (1106-1130)[edit]

During a slow siege through the late 900s and the 1000s, the Lords of Thunder cut off the trading partners and independent resource worlds to trailing of the Union. In 1106, the final strike came, as the Thunder laid seige to the capital of the Union at Silest and extracted a quick surrender, delivered with the hope that the occupation would be easier. That was not to be. By the end of 1106 the worlds of the Union had been effectively merged with the empire of the Ktiir!t'krik, which is now the single largest political entity of Luretiir!girr Sector. Each planet is ruled by a Steppelord of the Thunder with an iron hoof. The empire is also commonly known as the Xuruk Empire, a misnomer since the K'kree word "Xuruk" refers to any collective of several herds in a given geographical area.

K'kree laws that prohibit the eating of meat and that impose what amounts to second-class citizenship on all non-K'kree inhabitants of the Union have transformed the thriving state into a police tyranny. Many former pirates have entered the lucrative smuggling trade along Renkard's borders, their principal cargo refugees from the Union's worlds.
