System Data

Caro-Rasand System

The primary is Caro, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.52 Sols, a mass of 0.871 Sols and a diameter of 1.265 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum inner world, and (II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world. (III) Rasand orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. Orbital positions (IV) through (VII) are unavailable due to the presence of the companion star. (VIII) a small gas giant, (IX) a spectacularly ringed large gas giant, (X) a very thin atmosphere bigworld, (XI) a very large gas giant, (XII-I) a vacuum worldlet, and (XII-II) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

  • The pull of Ressam, the companion star, affects the worlds lying within Caro's inner and habitable zones, causing them to have elliptical orbits. Caro's outer worlds orbit the Caro-Ressam barycenter.

Ressam Subsystem

The companion is Ressam, a dwarf star lying at a mean separation of 1.6 AU (orbital position (V), 239.4 million km) from Caro. Ressam has a luminosity of 0.0004 Sols, a mass of 0.83 Sols and a diameter of 12,500 km. It is circled by (I) a narrow dense stony planetoid belt that is particularly rich in nickel-iron bodies.

  • The two stars have similar masses and orbit a barycenter located at around 0.85 AU (orbital position (III), 127 million km). They have an orbital period around one another of approximately 223 days.

Mainworld Data

(III) Rasand

(III) Rasand is designated the mainworld. It has an eccentric orbit around Caro, with a mean orbital distance of 0.68 AU: as it approaches perihelion with Ressam its orbital distance increases to approximately 0.71 AU. The world has an orbital period of 219 days 11 hours and a rotation period of 22.1 hours. The axial tilt is 14 degrees. Rasand has a diameter of 9,896 km, a density of 5.68 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.8 G. It experiences powerful tidal stresses generated by the system’s two stars and is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, with a mean surface pressure of 0.96 bar and a composition of 77% nitrogen (N2), 22% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor (H2O), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 54% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges are around 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 23°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and local weather systems, driven by the star and the oceans, work their way across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Satellite

Rasand retains a single natural satellite, a very small irregularly-shaped vacuum worldlet named Nalo:

(IIIa) Nalo (UWP HS00000-0, orbiting Rasand at 70 Diameters/690,000 km).

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Total surface area: 308 million km², water surface area: 167 million km², land surface area: 141 million km². Oceans of liquid water cover a little over half of the surface: the southern hemisphere is dominated a single island-studded ocean, the equator by archipelagos, marshland and shallow lakes, while much of the northern hemisphere is rugged and arid. The climate is generally temperate. The north is generally dry while the equator is far warmer and experiences near continuous rains. The southern ocean moderates marine temperatures, though seasonal sea-ice forms at the southern pole.

  • Notable locations include the garden-island of Sarabaum, the jewelled arches at the Cape of Torment, the polar Mountain of the Stars, and the unspoiled mist-clad wildernesses of the Singing Forests.

The Season of Cold

Every 284 days Rasand's elliptical orbit moves it to approximately 0.71 AU from Caro, causing temperatures to plummet around the globe and bringing on the Season of Cold. Its orbital eccentricity matches the orbital position of Ressam, the system's companion star. As Rasand approaches aphelion with Caro the mean surface temperature may fall by as much as 20°C: at higher latitudes the ground freezes, ice forms and snow may fall, while the southern polar regions experience a rapid expansion in sea-ice. During this same period geological activity increases significantly. The low temperatures induce a hibernation period in most types of flora and fauna. The Season of Cold lasts for approximately 70 days, with the period of coldest temperatures lasting for approximately 14 days.

Native Lifeforms

Rasand is classified as a garden world and has has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. The southern ocean teems with aquatic species of all kinds, while the equatorial regions are verdant with vast wetland forests and the multitudes of species that live among them. In northern latitudes the trees give way to hills and plains filled with grazing herd-beasts and agile predators. The plains eventually become arid badlands and finally frigid stony polar wastelands.

Rasand is the homeworld of the Esaran, an advanced sophont species. The Sacred Cradle, a fertile equatorial river delta ringed by low mountains, is the region where their civilisation and culture first developed.

World Starport

Rasand has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • War footing (government modifier x1.5). Port Capacity: 1,050,000 dTons

Facilities

Port facilities within the system include:

World Technology Level

Rasand possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government

Rasand has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

Rasand is divided into Cantons, large nation-states that surround major urban centers. Most Cantons are relatively small, lying along the world's pleasant equatorial coastline. A few are more maritime in nature, holding large islands and archipelagos in the southern ocean. A number of larger but more backward Cantons lay claim to the vast open plains of the northern hemisphere.

World Military

Rasand is the cultural heart of Esaran society and it maintains powerful, well equipped armed forces to defend it.

Several advanced weapon systems are produced on the world for the Esaran Cultural Area's naval, army and marine forces.

World Economy

  • Resources: A (Abundant). Both on-world and in-system resource extraction and exploitation.
  • Labor: 7 (in excess of 80 million)
  • Infrastructure: C (Very extensive). Road and maglev networks, gravitic vehicles.
  • Efficiency: +4 (Advanced). Esaran principles of order, organisation and economy.

Trade Data

  • Natural Resources: Mineral Ores, Food Plants
  • Processed Resources: Metals
  • Manufactured Goods: Starships
  • Information: Cultural Materials, Raw Data
  • Novelties: Uniques, Cultural Items
