System Data

Ras Tennol consists of two separate binary star systems lying approximately 4,200 AU apart.

Mentaska-Dollen-Ras Tennol System

The primary is Mentaska, a huge red giant star. It has a luminosity of 1194 Sols, a mass of 6.74 Sols, and a diameter of 179 million km – the corona lies at 0.6 AU, just within orbital position (III). The companion is Dollen, a tiny dwarf star that orbits at a mean separation of 300,000 km. Dollen has a luminosity of 0.00004 Sols, a mass of 0.83 Sols, and a diameter of 12,500 km. The inner system consists of (IV) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (V) a vacuum inner world, (VI) a very thin atmosphere inner world, (VII) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (VIII) an exotic atmosphere radworld – orbital positions (I) and (II) lie within the star and orbital position (III) is empty. (IX) Ras Tennol orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (X) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (XI) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (XII) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (XIII) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Plaskin Subsystem

The far companion is Plaskin, an ordinary red main sequence star that lies approximately 4200 AU from Mentaska. It has a luminosity of 0.0136 Sols, a mass of 0.3626 Sols, and a diameter of 551,000 km. (I) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (II) an exotic atmosphere radworld form the inner part of the outer system. Orbital positions (III) through (VI) are unavailable due to the presence of the companion star. (VII) a large gas giant, (VIII) a vacuum iceworld, and (IX) a dense icy planetoid belt form the outer part of the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Phen Subsystem

The distant companion is Phen, a dwarf star. It has a luminosity of 0.00003 Sols, a mass of 1.11 Sols, and a diameter of 8,500 km. (I) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (II) a small gas giant form the outer system. The gas giant retains satellites.

  • Plaskin and Phen, the distant companion, orbit one another at a mean separation of 1.13 AU (169 million km) and have an orbital period around their barycenter of 362 days.

Mainworld Data

(IX) Ras Tannol

(IX) Ras Tennol is designated the mainworld. It orbits Mentaska at a mean distance of 5.32 AU (796 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 4 years 266 days and a rotation period of 31.5 hours. The axial tilt is 15 degrees. Ras Tennol has a diameter of 8,369 km, a density of 7.45 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.89 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, with a mean surface pressure of 0.81 bar and a composition of 77% nitrogen (N2), 22% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 2% of the surface is covered in lakes of liquid water: tidal ranges are negligible. Mean surface temperature: 30°C. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star sweep across the globe. The climate is static.

Mainworld Size (S)

This world is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

This world has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

This world has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Satellites

Ras Tennol retains two natural satellites, an ice-capped vacuum worldlet named Kaled and a cratered vacuum worldlet named Morill:

(VIIa) Kaled (UWP F301417-B, orbiting at 15 Diameters/125,000 km)
(VIIb) Morill (UWP F200368-B, orbiting at 55 Diameters/460,000 km)

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Total surface area: 220 million km², Land surface area: 216 million km², Water surface area: 4 million km². Ras Tannol is a desert world and has practically no standing water on its arrid, parched surface. The northern hemisphere is taken up by the rugged Tannolin Highlands, the equatorial regions are covered by shifting, wind-scoured dune seas and the Grand Neg, while the southern hemisphere is dominated by the Ras, a huge and ancient impact crater surrounded by a vast fractured landscape of canyons and ravines. The only large body of water on the world is the Salvation Sea, a hot and brackish lake located in the deepest part of the Ras.

Native Lifeforms

Mentaska-Dollen-Ras Tennol System

Ras Tennol has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of water. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal. The interior of the Ras and the fractured terrain around it supports an extensive, self-supporting ecosystem made up of accidentally introduced species. Most of the fauna found on the world is small - typically less than 1 kg in weight - and is largely made up of pests, vermin, former pets and stowaways that have escaped from visiting starships.

The cold marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (X) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and warmth. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

Plaskin Subsystem

No world in the subsystem is known to have native life.

Phen Subsystem

No world in the subsystem is known to have native life.

World Starport

Ras Tennol has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Peace footing (government modifier x1.15). Port Capacity: 920,000 dTons

Almost all of the fuel available at Ras Tennol's starport is imported by Gas Traders from the Plaskin subsystem. Ships registered at the port benefit from substantially discounted fuel prices.

Facilities

Port facilities within the system include:

World Technology Level

Ras Tennol possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government

Ras Tennol is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members. The government of Ras Tennol is the Delegation of Ras, headed by the Prime Fugleman and his supporting staff. It is an extensive bureaucracy divided into different offices of state but dominated by the Directorate of Trade and the Chamber of Taxation. Police duties on the world are carried out by hired Security organisations.

World Military

Ras Tennol is a major Security clearinghouse and an important operational base for StarMerc organisations performing escort duties along the various Star Lanes that meet at the system.

The current freelance military asset appraisal includes the following Ras Tennol Forces.

World Economy

Shipbuilding and ship maintenance.

Finance and Brokerage.

Ras Tennol lies at the junction of the Outland Run and New Border Star Lanes.

Trade Data

A number of important companies have their headquarters at Ras Tennol:

World Demographics

Approximately 70 million (99.7% of the population) humans of Terran descent.

200,000 (0.3% of the population) other sophonts, largely Hoppers, though with small communities of Edur and Temelik.
